7 Days in Rio de Janeiro

Three days in Rio gives you the postcards. Seven days gives you the city. With a full week you'll do Christ the Redeemer at sunrise (no crowds), hike Pedra Bonita instead of just looking at it, drink samba in Lapa on a Friday, and still have two days for Búzios or Ilha Grande.

This is the locally-tested 7-day plan we give friends, balanced for icons, neighborhoods, food and one real escape from the city.

Quick answer: the 7-day plan at a glance

    • Day 1: Arrival, Ipanema sunset at Arpoador, dinner in Leblon.
    • Day 2: Christ the Redeemer (sunrise), Santa Teresa, Lapa night out.
    • Day 3: Sugarloaf + Urca walk, Copacabana evening.
    • Day 4: Tijuca Forest hike (Pedra Bonita or Vista Chinesa), beach club afternoon.
    • Day 5: Day trip — Búzios or Petrópolis.
    • Day 6: Ilha Grande overnight OR favela tour + Maracanã football match.
    • Day 7: Slow morning, brunch, souvenir shopping, last beach swim, airport.

    Day 1 — Arrival & Arpoador sunset

Land at GIG, take an official taxi or Uber Black to Ipanema (R$120–160, 45 min). Check in, change into swim clothes, and walk to Posto 9. Late lunch at the Garota de Ipanema kiosk: chopp + sandwich natural.

At 5:30pm walk to Arpoador rock for sunset — the whole beach claps when the sun drops. Dinner: Zaza Bistrô Tropical (Ipanema) for moqueca, then early to bed.

Day 2 — Christ the Redeemer + Santa Teresa + Lapa

Book the 7am van from Paineiras (R$98, online) — you'll have Christ to yourself before the tour buses. Down by 10am. Uber to Santa Teresa, ride the bondinho (yellow tram), lunch at Aprazível.

Late afternoon: Selarón Steps + Arcos da Lapa. Dinner at Bar do Mineiro. Then samba: Rio Scenarium Friday nights, Carioca da Gema any night. See Lapa samba guide.

    Day 3 — Sugarloaf + Urca

Slow morning. Take Uber to Praia Vermelha at 3pm. Hike up Morro da Urca (free, 40 min) or take the cable car. Cable car up Pão de Açúcar for sunset — book the 5pm slot. Drinks at Bar Urca sitting on the seawall with locals.

Dinner in Copacabana — Marius Crustáceos or Pérgula at Copacabana Palace.

Day 4 — Tijuca hike + beach club

Early Uber to Pedra Bonita trailhead (R$50 from Ipanema). 1.5-hour hike with panoramic Rio views. Down by 10:30am, head to a Barra beach club: Nas Tribos or Praia Brava. Pool, lunch, DJ. Back to the hotel by 7pm for a calm evening.

Day 5 — Day trip: Búzios or Petrópolis

Búzios (2h30 each way): beach village, Geribá or Ferradura for the day, Rua das Pedras for dinner. Easy Lift Transfer shuttle R$140 each way. See Búzios from Rio.

Petrópolis (1h15): cooler mountain air, the Imperial Museum, German cuisine, waterfalls. Easier as a day trip.

Day 6 — Ilha Grande overnight OR football + favela

Option A (recommended): Overnight Ilha Grande. Transfer to Conceição de Jacareí 7am, ferry by 9:30am. Beach day at Lopes Mendes, sleep in Vila do Abraão, ferry back tomorrow morning. Logistics in our Ilha Grande guide.

Option B (stay in Rio): Considering a morning favela visit? Read whether a favela tour fits your trip, then compare Rio favela walking tours before choosing an operator. For football, use our Maracanã match tickets and stadium-tour guide to check the booking options. Arrange this day around a confirmed fixture and tour timing rather than assuming both will fit; keep the favela-tour planning guidance handy.

    Day 7 — Slow goodbye

Brunch at Talho Capixaba (Leblon) or Confeitaria Colombo (Centro). Last swim at Leblon (Posto 11). Souvenir shopping in Ipanema — see our souvenir guide. Uber to GIG 3h before flight (Rio traffic is unpredictable).

    Practical week-long tips

    • Base in Ipanema — don't change hotels mid-week. The day trips are easier than re-packing.
    • Pre-book Christ tickets for sunrise (Paineiras vans only) and Sugarloaf for sunset.
    • Reserve Lapa samba on Friday nights — Rio Scenarium fills by 9pm.
    • Buy a Brazil eSim (Holafly, Airalo) on day 1. Uber, WhatsApp and PIX all need data.
    • Pack one nice outfit for Fasano-tier dinners — most days are flip-flops.

    Before you go: the essentials

A well-placed hotel, travel insurance that covers Brazil's private hospitals, and an eSIM so Uber and Google Maps work the minute you land.

    FAQ

Is 7 days in Rio too much?

No — 7 days is the sweet spot. Three days cover the icons (Christ, Sugarloaf, Ipanema), two days unlock the city (Santa Teresa, Tijuca, favela visit), and two more let you take real day trips (Búzios, Petrópolis, Ilha Grande) without rushing.

How much does a 7-day Rio trip cost?

Mid-range: US$1,400–2,000 per person excluding flights (R$300/day hotel, R$120 food, R$200 activities). Budget: US$650 (hostels, kilo restaurants, public transport). Luxury: US$4,500+ at Fasano or Copacabana Palace.

What's the best month for a 7-day Rio trip?

April–May and September–October: dry, 24–28°C, fewer crowds, lower hotel rates. Avoid February for Carnaval pricing unless you specifically want it. Skip January peak rains and August school holidays.

Which neighborhood should I base myself in for a week?

Ipanema for first-timers — central, safe, beach access, walkable to Leblon and Copacabana. Botafogo if you want a local feel with better restaurants and lower prices. Compare in our Ipanema vs Copacabana guide.

Do I need a car for 7 days in Rio?

No. Uber is cheap, plentiful and safer than renting. Use the metro for Ipanema↔Centro. Only consider a rental for the day trips to Búzios, Petrópolis or the Costa Verde — and even then, transfers are easier.
