This is why nearby Petrópolis often beats a more photogenic coast on a short visit, and why we refuse to sell Iguaçu as a day trip.

Choose a specific trip that matches the destination. Rent a car only when route flexibility outweighs Rio traffic, toll and parking stress.
Staying overnight in Paraty (as we'd recommend)? Pick the tour that matches your day rather than a generic transfer: the jeep-and-waterfalls run, the historic-centre walk, or the Mamanguá speedboat and snorkel.
Adding Iguaçu Falls to your Brazil trip (never as a Rio day trip)? Book the version that fits: the Brazilian-side falls with the Bird Park, or the multi-day Rio-and-Iguaçu adventure.

Niterói →

Worth the drive? Yes for architecture, ocean beaches or the skyline; no if you only want to photograph MAC.
Combine Niemeyer's museum with Itacoatiara or a proper lunch rather than treating the ferry as the whole trip.
Petrópolis →
About 1.5 hours by road
Worth the drive? Yes for history and cooler mountain air; skip it if museums leave you cold.
Museu Imperial, Crystal Palace and an Itaipava meal make the strongest full-day shape.
Paquetá Island →

Worth the drive? Yes for a slow, inexpensive reset; no for pristine swimming beaches.

Restaurants and evening atmosphere are part of Búzios, which day visitors barely experience.

Colonial streets, rainforest and cachaça deserve two nights, not ten hours in a vehicle.

These belong in the decision set, but calling them simple Rio day trips hides the transport reality.

Worth the drive? Stay at least two nights; the island is not a credible relaxed day trip.
Boat connections, Lopes Mendes and weather make an overnight stay the minimum sensible plan.
Iguaçu Falls →
A two-hour flight plus airports and transfers
Worth the drive? Absolutely worth adding to Brazil, but never describe it as a day trip from Rio.
Plan two or three nights in Foz do Iguaçu to see both sides without racing the flight clock.

Can you visit Ilha Grande as a day trip from Rio?
You can buy a very long Ilha Grande day excursion, but we do not recommend it as the default. Road traffic and boat connections leave limited island time, and bad weather magnifies delays. Stay at least two nights if Lopes Mendes, hiking or a relaxed boat day is the goal.
Is Paraty worth a day trip from Rio?
Paraty is worth visiting, but usually not as a same-day return from Rio. The road can take four to five hours each way, so the colonial centre, boat trips and rainforest are reduced to a rushed stop. Two nights turns the transfer into a worthwhile Costa Verde trip.
Should I book a tour or travel independently?
Book a tour when transfers are awkward, the day includes a boat, or a guide materially improves a museum or trail. Travel independently to Niterói and Paquetá by ferry. A rental car helps for mountain and coastal routes only if you are comfortable with traffic, tolls, parking and returning before dark.
