Niterói from Rio: The Complete Day-Trip Guide

How to get from Rio to Niterói

By ferry (recommended)

CCR Barcas ferries leave from Estação das Barcas at Praça XV in Centro Rio (closest metro: Carioca, then a 10-min walk). Crossings every 10–20 minutes, 5:30am–11pm. Buy a single fare at the gate (R$8.55) — no need to book ahead. Sit on the upper deck on the right-hand side leaving Rio for the Sugarloaf money shot.

By car or Uber

MAC Niterói (Museu de Arte Contemporânea)

Oscar Niemeyer's 1996 masterpiece — a 16-meter-wide concrete saucer suspended over the cliff at Boa Viagem. The building outshines the rotating art collection, but that's fine: this is sculpture you can walk inside. The wraparound viewing terrace gives the most complete panorama of Rio's South Zone you'll get anywhere.

Caminho Niemeyer waterfront

A 1.5 km cluster of additional Niemeyer buildings along the bay: Teatro Popular, Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, and the white catamaran-shaped Memorial Roberto Silveira. Walkable in 30 minutes; mostly closed to the public inside but worth the architectural pilgrimage if you love modernism.

Niterói's beaches: which one?

Bay beaches (good views, don't swim)

Icaraí and São Francisco face directly back at Rio — best Rio-skyline beach walks in the metro area. Water is bay-polluted; treat them as promenades, not swim spots.

Ocean beaches (the real reason to come)
