Lapa sits between Centro and Santa Teresa, defined by the white aqueduct (Arcos da Lapa, 1750). On the dance floor, nobody expects you to samba well — they expect you to try. Safety in Lapa: Honest Take

Lapa is safer than its reputation on Friday/Saturday — packed, lit, policed. It is more dangerous than its reputation on Sunday and Monday, when the same streets are empty and badly lit. The two recurring problems are distraction pickpocketing (someone bumps you, friend lifts the phone) and fake taxi scams outside the Arches.
