- Ride the Santa Teresa tram across the Arcos. The yellow bondinho crosses the aqueduct's top — the most scenic R$20 ride in Rio. Board at Largo da Carioca VLT station.
- Browse Rua do Lavradio antique shops. Lapa's most civilised street. Vintage furniture, records, tiles and colonial-era curiosities in a row of 19th-century townhouses. Weekdays are quieter.

Is Lapa safe for tourists?+
On busy Friday and Saturday nights (21:00–03:00), the main strip — Av. Mem de Sá, Rua do Lavradio, the Arcos — is full of people and generally safe. Keep your phone in a front pocket, don't flash jewellery, and Uber home after 03:00 rather than walking. Quiet weeknights and side streets north of the Arcos need more caution. Should I stay in Lapa or just visit?+
Most travellers stay in Santa Teresa or Centro and walk to Lapa for the nightlife — it's a 10-minute stroll from either. Lapa's hotel stock leans hostel-heavy; if you want a boutique room, book in Santa Teresa (uphill charm, quiet mornings) and descend for samba. Budget backpackers can find Lapa dorm beds from R$60/night.
What is the best night for Lapa?+
Friday and Saturday are the main events — every club is open, street vendors line the Arcos, and the crowd is a mix of Cariocas and travellers. Monday is the sleeper pick: the samba roda at Pedra do Sal (in nearby Saúde, not Lapa itself) draws a local crowd and is free.

Can I walk from Lapa to Santa Teresa?+
Yes — two ways. The scenic route: climb Escadaria Selarón (215 steps, 10 min) and emerge on Rua Joaquim Silva at the edge of Santa Teresa. The easy route: take the bondinho tram from Largo da Carioca (R$20), which crosses the top of the Arcos. Both are safe during the day.
Where should I eat in Lapa during the day?+
For cheap lunches, head to Rua do Lavradio: Cosmopolita (since 1926), por-quilo buffets on side streets, and Antigamente Bar for cold beer and petiscos.
