Getting from Rio to Arraial do Cabo

Organised day tour (best if you only have one day)

Public bus (Viação 1001)

Rental car

The escuna boat tour (the whole reason you're here)

The classic Passeio de Escuna leaves from Praia dos Anjos harbor 3 times a day (9am, 11am, 1pm). R$60–90 per person for 2h30. The itinerary is standard across operators:

• Praia do Farol — 30 min stop on the sand. This is the beach.
• Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia — twin coves, snorkeling stop.
• Gruta Azul — a sea grotto lit turquoise by underwater sunlight (only enterable at low tide).
• Ilha do Cabo Frio — swim stop in a protected bay.

Best beaches in Arraial do Cabo

Praia do Farol

Boat-access only. Powder-white sand, water the colour of a swimming pool, and Ilha do Farol rising behind. IBAMA limits daily visitors, which is why it stays pristine. The escuna gives you 30 min here — plenty for the photos, but a private lancha lets you stay 90 min.

Prainha

Small crescent framed by rocks, 10-min walk from town center. Best for a half-day with kids: calm water, snack kiosks, umbrella rentals R$20.

Praia do Forno

15-min hike over the hill from Prainha (or R$40 boat taxi). Sheltered turquoise cove, some of the best shore snorkeling on the coast. Bring your own mask — rentals are basic.

Praia Grande

40 km of open Atlantic, wild and windswept. Not for swimming — for a sunset walk and the wide-sky photo.

Praia dos Anjos

The harbor beach. Working boats, casual seafood kiosks, where you catch the escunas. Not for lounging — for the atmosphere and a plate of fried lula before the boat.

• Check the wind forecast before booking — the Cabo Frio region gets strong easterlies July–September and boats cancel same-day.

• Cash is king — many harbor kiosks and small pousadas don't take cards. Withdraw in Rio before you leave.
• The IBAMA fee for Praia do Farol landings is R$5 — included in most escuna tickets but check.
