Can you visit Búzios or Angra dos Reis as a day trip from Rio?
Yes. Búzios is about 2.5 hours each way and works well as an organised boat day trip that hits several beaches without you driving. Angra dos Reis is roughly 2.5–3 hours, and a guided schooner day tour is the easiest way to island-hop the bay. Both are long days, so leave early — or turn them into an overnight if you'd rather not rush.
Which day trips from Rio don't need a car?
All the popular ones can be done without driving. Organised tours run to Búzios, Arraial do Cabo, Angra dos Reis, Petrópolis and Paraty, with hotel pickups; intercity buses also serve every one of these towns. A car only helps if you want to stop freely along the way — for a single destination, a tour or bus is cheaper and less stressful than parking.
How far in advance should I book a Rio day trip?
For boat trips to Búzios, Arraial do Cabo or Angra dos Reis in high season (December–March and holidays), book 3–7 days ahead — the best boats sell out and prices climb. Off-season you can often book a day or two before. Petrópolis and Paraty tours are easier to grab last-minute, but weekends fill faster than weekdays.
Is a day trip long enough, or should I stay overnight?
Búzios, Arraial do Cabo and Petrópolis all work as day trips if you start early. Paraty is far enough (around 4 hours) that an overnight is far more rewarding than a rushed day.
