Best Italian Restaurants in Rio de Janeiro: A Local Shortlist

Quick answer
For Italian food in Rio, match the restaurant to the evening: Gero and SULT for a sit-down dinner, Piano on Rua Dias Ferreira for a current Leblon option, and Capricciosa for pizza and antipasti. Cipriani at Copacabana Palace won 50 Top Italy's 2026 world ranking, but the hotel currently lists it as closed for renovation; confirm reopening before making plans.

Shortlist areas
This guide includes picks in Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca; check the address against your plans.
Award benchmark
Ristorante Hotel Cipriani topped 50 Top Italy's 2026 Best Italian Restaurants in the World list; Copacabana Palace currently lists it as closed for renovation.
Booking
Popular venues and small dining rooms may fill on weekends. Check the restaurant's current reservation channel.
Dinner time
Kitchen hours and last seating vary by venue and day; check before planning a late dinner.
Service charge
Check the bill for any service charge and ask the restaurant if the line item is unclear.
Couvert
Bread or small antipasti may arrive as a charged couvert. Ask the price and decline it before eating if you do not want it.
Portion size
Serving sizes vary. Ask 'dá para dois?' if you want to know whether a dish is meant to share.
Pizza style
Roman (thin, crisp) and Neapolitan (puffed cornicione) are both available; Brazilian pizza is a different, sweeter tradition.
Price range
A Dias Ferreira or Ipanema dinner for two with wine sits well above a neighbourhood pizzeria. Check menus online first.
Dress
Most of this shortlist is relaxed; check the venue's own guidance for a formal hotel dining room.
Choose by neighbourhood and occasion
Rio's Italian options range from formal hotel restaurants to contemporary kitchens, trattorias, pizzerias and family-style chains. The shortlist below is organised by the kind of meal and the area, rather than as a citywide ranking: a useful choice depends on where you are staying, what is open and what you want to spend.
Restaurant addresses, menus and schedules change. We prioritised places with an official listing or recent coverage, included current address notes where available, and link to the venue or directory so you can check the details before setting out.
The award benchmark: Cipriani, Copacabana Palace
Ristorante Hotel Cipriani inside the Belmond Copacabana Palace was named number one in 50 Top Italy's 2026 Best Italian Restaurants in the World ranking. That makes it a useful benchmark for the city's Italian dining scene, but it is not a bookable recommendation at the time of this review: the hotel currently lists the restaurant as closed for renovation. Check the hotel's own dining page for an opening update before planning around it.
When it reopens, expect a formal hotel restaurant and an occasion-level budget; the award does not make it the right choice for every pasta dinner. Until then, choose an operating restaurant from the shortlist below. We have kept Cipriani here as context, with its current closure stated clearly, rather than sending readers to a closed dining room.
For an occasion: Gero, Hotel Fasano Ipanema
Gero is Rogério Fasano's Italian restaurant in Rio. Its current location is inside Hotel Fasano at Avenida Vieira Souto 80 in Ipanema; older listings may still show the former address on Rua Aníbal de Mendonça. Check the hotel's restaurant page for current hours, menu and booking details.
The beachfront hotel setting makes Gero a fitting choice for a celebratory or more formal dinner. The group's menu includes pasta alongside other Italian-influenced dishes; check the current menu and prices before reserving.
The current Dias Ferreira option: Piano, Leblon
Piano opened at Rua Dias Ferreira 233, the address previously occupied by Quadrucci and Zuka. Recent Rio restaurant coverage describes fresh pasta, Italian classics and preparations over the fire; check Piano's current channel for hours and booking details before you go.
This is the kind of Leblon dinner most visitors need: a current Italian restaurant on a street with a dense choice of places to eat, without making the evening a hotel-restaurant occasion. Check the menu and reservation options close to your date, then decide whether Piano's style and price fit the group.
The modern one: SULT, Botafogo
SULT, at Rua Fernandes Guimarães 77 in Botafogo, is a contemporary option on this shortlist. The Michelin Guide lists the restaurant; check its current profile and SULT's own channels for the menu, opening days and booking details.
Its Botafogo location can suit travellers staying nearby or planning an evening in the neighbourhood. We include it as a distinct style from the hotel dining rooms and traditional trattoria options elsewhere in this guide.
The neighbourhood trattoria: Pici Trattoria, Ipanema
Pici Trattoria is listed at Rua Barão da Torre 348 in Ipanema. The Michelin Guide includes the restaurant in its Rio selection; check its current entry for the description and the venue's own channels for hours, menu and reservations.
Its location makes it an option for an Ipanema evening. Check availability ahead for a weekend visit, particularly if you are travelling as a group.
Pizza, properly: Sforno, Copacabana
Sforno Pizza Romana is listed at Rua Aires Saldanha 104 in Copacabana and describes its pizza as Roman-style, crisp outside and soft inside. Check the restaurant's current menu and service details before going.
This is the shortlist's dedicated Roman-style pizza option. Pizza traditions vary between restaurants, so use the menu and the venue's description to decide whether its style suits your group.
Pizza and antipasti, the Rio way: Capricciosa
Capricciosa is a Rio institution and functions differently from an Italian pizzeria: the draw is a large antipasti spread alongside wood-fired pizza, and Cariocas treat it as a sociable, late, slightly indulgent evening rather than a purist's pizza. The Ipanema branch is at Rua Vinícius de Moraes 134 and there is a Jardim Botânico branch at Rua Maria Angélica 37.
Our honest take: go for the atmosphere and the antipasti rather than to compare the pizza with Naples. It is louder and more expensive than a neighbourhood pizzeria and that is the deal — this is a night out, and it is a very Rio one. If you have a group that cannot agree on a restaurant, this is usually the answer.
Barra da Tijuca: Fiammetta and Casa Tua
Fiammetta has a listed location at Via Parque Shopping in Barra da Tijuca. Check the shopping-centre directory for current hours and the exact location before setting out.
Casa Tua in Barra offers two formats: Casa Tua Cucina for a more formal meal and Forneria for a casual pizza or plate. Its official reservation page says reservations are taken for Cucina, not Forneria. Check the venue's own page for current location and booking details.
The affordable fallback: La Mole
La Mole is a long-running Rio chain with an official location listing for Copacabana at Rua Siqueira Campos 18, as well as branches in other neighbourhoods. It is a casual fallback rather than a special-occasion recommendation.
It can suit an evening when you want a familiar, casual restaurant and a straightforward pasta option. Check the current menu, hours and route from your accommodation; portion sizes and atmosphere depend on the branch and dish.
How we chose, and what we left out
Three filters shaped this shortlist. First, the venue needs a current official listing or recent reporting that supports its location; we flag Cipriani separately because the hotel currently lists it as closed for renovation. Second, it should be practical from a visitor's likely base, which rules out some good restaurants farther across the city. Third, each entry should offer a distinct style or neighbourhood rather than repeat the same dinner in a different room. Hours, menus and booking availability change, so check the venue directly before travelling.
What we left out: generic hotel buffet Italian, the mall food-court chains, and a number of well-reviewed places whose Italian identity is really contemporary Brazilian cooking with pasta on the menu. We have also not ranked by stars or scores, because Rio's restaurant guides are inconsistent and the better question is which evening you are planning. If your priority is Brazilian food rather than Italian, our Brazilian food guide and the neighbourhood restaurant guides are the better starting points.
Ordering, paying and the Brazilian conventions that surprise people
Three habits help at the table. Ask 'dá para dois?' (is it enough for two?) before ordering if you are unsure about portion size. If bread or small antipasti arrives as a couvert, ask whether it is charged and decline it before eating if you do not want it. Check the bill for a service-charge line and ask the staff if you need an explanation.
Check current kitchen hours and reservation details with the restaurant, especially for a weekend dinner or a visit to Centro after office hours. Cards are common but payment options vary by venue; Pix may require access to an eligible Brazilian account or third-party provider. Our money and tipping guides cover visitor payment options.
Common mistakes tourists make
- Using an old listing for Gero's former Rua Aníbal de Mendonça address instead of checking the current Hotel Fasano listing.
- Assuming restaurant hours, booking channels or last seating are the same across the city; check the venue for your date.
- Choosing a restaurant far from your evening plans without checking the route and return transport.
- Assuming pasta portions are either individual or for sharing without asking the restaurant.
- Accepting the couvert without realising it is a charged item, then querying it on the bill.
- Expecting Italian-style pizza at a Brazilian pizzeria — it is a different, softer, sweeter tradition.
- Turning up at a Dias Ferreira restaurant on a Friday without a reservation.
Local expert tips
- Reserve ahead when a venue recommends it or has limited seating, and confirm through its current channel.
- Ask 'dá para dois?' before ordering if you are unsure whether a dish is sized to share.
- Ask whether a couvert is charged and decline it before eating if you do not want it.
- For Roman-style pizza go to Sforno in Copacabana; for the sociable antipasti-and-pizza evening go to Capricciosa.
- If you are based in Botafogo or Flamengo, compare SULT with the restaurants closer to your accommodation.
- If you are in Barra for an event, Casa Tua saves you the drive into the South Zone.
- Use the restaurant's official booking or social channel to confirm hours close to your visit.
- Check current menus and opening hours for the restaurant and neighbourhood you plan to visit.
- Check the bill for a service-charge line before comparing the final total with menu prices.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Italian restaurant in Rio de Janeiro?+
Ristorante Hotel Cipriani topped 50 Top Italy's 2026 Best Italian Restaurants in the World ranking, but Copacabana Palace currently lists it as closed for renovation. Check the hotel's own dining page for a reopening update. For an operating option, consider Gero, SULT or Piano according to location and occasion.
Where is Gero restaurant in Rio now?+
Gero is inside the Hotel Fasano at Avenida Vieira Souto 80 on the Ipanema beachfront. It moved there in 2020 from its long-standing corner house on Rua Aníbal de Mendonça, so older listings and blog round-ups still give the wrong address.
Where can I find Italian restaurants in Rio?+
This shortlist includes options in Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca. Check each restaurant's current address and opening hours, then choose based on your plans and transport.
Do I need to book Italian restaurants in Rio?+
Reserve popular restaurants and weekend tables, especially for a small room or a formal dinner. Check the venue's own booking channel for current availability. Informal pizzerias may take walk-ins, but ask the restaurant about its current policy.
What time do Italian restaurants in Rio serve dinner?+
Dinner hours vary by venue and day. Check the current kitchen hours and last seating with the restaurant before planning an evening, particularly if you will arrive late.
Where can I get Roman-style pizza in Rio?+
Sforno Pizza Romana is listed at Rua Aires Saldanha 104 in Copacabana and describes its pizza as Roman-style, crisp outside and soft inside. Check its current menu and opening hours before visiting.
Is Italian food expensive in Rio de Janeiro?+
Prices range from casual pizza and chain restaurants to formal hotel dining rooms. Check the current menu and any service-charge line before choosing; a venue's own menu is the best guide to its present prices.
What is the couvert charge in Brazilian restaurants?+
A couvert is bread or small antipasti served at the table and may be charged separately. Ask the staff whether it costs extra, and decline it before eating if you do not want it.
Can pasta portions in Rio be shared?+
Serving sizes vary by restaurant and dish. Ask 'dá para dois?' (is it enough for two?) before ordering if you are considering sharing.
Is there good Italian food in Barra da Tijuca?+
Yes. Casa Tua offers Cucina and Forneria formats, and Fiammetta has a listed location at Via Parque Shopping. Check each venue's current hours and booking details before you go; a Barra base can make a nearby dinner more convenient than crossing the city to the South Zone.
