The samba schools: who competes
A samba school (escola de samba) isn't a school at all — it's a community organisation, usually rooted in a specific neighbourhood or favela, that exists year-round to build one parade. The top division is the Grupo Especial: twelve elite schools that parade on the main Carnaval nights and compete for the title everyone talks about. Below them is the Série Ouro (the old Grupo de Acesso), which parades on the Friday and Saturday. Each year the last-placed Grupo Especial school is relegated and the Série Ouro champion is promoted — a football-style system that keeps the rivalry alive.

How the competition is judged
Every school is scored across nine quesitos (judging criteria). A panel of judges — six per criterion in recent years — marks each school, and the scores are read out live at the apuração on Ash Wednesday, the single most nerve-shredding afternoon of the Carioca year. The school with the most accumulated points wins; when schools tie, the samba-enredo is the official tiebreaker. In 2026 the margin was brutal: Unidos do Viradouro took its fourth title with 270.0 points, just 0.1 ahead of Beija-Flor.

Two words worth knowing: the enredo is the school's theme or story for the year (a historical figure, an idea, a critique); the samba-enredo is the original song written to carry that theme. Every school releases its samba-enredo months ahead — learning even the chorus will transform your night, because you'll be singing it with tens of thousands of people.

The avenue is about 700 metres long: schools enter from the Avenida Presidente Vargas end and finish at the Praça da Apoteose, so every position trades the opening wing against the finale. Two practical rules apply to every sector. First, the ticket, not the metro map, tells you which entrance to use: the official operator plan assigns each sector to either the Praça Onze or the Central do Brasil approach, and going to the wrong side means a long detour through closed streets. Second, choose the night before the sector. A perfect seat on a night whose schools do not interest you is still a long night; the confirmed 2027 order is in the section above.

What to expect on the night
On each Grupo Especial night, four schools parade back to back. Gates open around 9pm, the first school enters shortly after, and the last finishes after 5am — a genuine all-nighter. A rough rhythm:
- ~9:00pm: gates and first school. The sound of 250 drummers hitting at once is unforgettable.
- ~10:30pm: second school. By now you're finding the chorus of each samba-enredo.
- ~12:30am: third school — often the crowd's peak energy.
- ~2:30–5:00am: the final school and the slow, elated drift home. Late parades are frequently the most polished.
