Summer begins in December, bringing stronger heat, humidity and a growing chance of thunderstorms. Conditions can change quickly: a bright beach morning may give way to an intense evening shower. Schedule weather-sensitive icons early and avoid placing every outdoor highlight in the final two days.

Severe rain can flood streets and increase landslide risk. Follow official alerts, avoid affected trails and allow extra airport time during disruptive weather. Climate normals help with packing but cannot validate a fixed sunset cruise or summit for a particular date.

Early December is usually different from the festive finish. Demand builds as Brazilian summer holidays, Christmas and Réveillon approach. The days around 31 December can involve minimum stays, strict cancellation rules and much less choice in beach neighbourhoods.

Choose accommodation around your New Year's plan. A Copacabana celebration does not make every Rio hotel equally practical once roads close and crowds fill the beachfront. Study the official operation when published, and prefer a property from which you can follow the authorised pedestrian or metro route.

Christmas Day can have reduced opening hours, so confirm restaurants and attractions instead of relying on normal weekly schedules. Réveillon arrangements are announced for each edition. Stage locations, transport rules, metro ticketing and prohibited items can change; Riotur and transport operators are the sources to revisit.

Wear comfortable footwear and carry very little on New Year's Eve. Agree on a meeting point and expect dense mobile networks. White clothing is a popular tradition, not an obligation. If the celebration is not your priority, staying away from central Copacabana can reduce some pressure but still requires transport planning.

Outside the final days, use summer pacing: beach or viewpoint early, a long shaded midday and neighbourhood activity later. Group attractions geographically and keep one storm-safe block. Near Réveillon, reduce the itinerary rather than forcing normal sightseeing through crowd controls.

Pack breathable clothes, strong sun protection, rain protection and secure footwear. At the beach, use lifeguarded sections, follow flags and avoid swimming near runoff after heavy rain. Warm water and festive mood do not remove normal ocean or theft precautions.
