    Best time to visit

    The half-day Porto Maravilha combo

The smartest single-Uber half-day in Rio, especially with kids or on a grey day:

    1. 9:15am — Uber from Ipanema/Copa (~25 min, R$40–55) to AquaRio.
    2. 9:30–11:30am — AquaRio, exit through the shark tunnel.
    3. 11:45am–1:15pmMuseu do Amanhã next door (Santiago Calatrava architecture + climate exhibits).
    4. 1:30pm — Boulevard Olímpico for the giant Eduardo Kobra "Ethnicities" mural (Guinness world record) + a light lunch at one of the port-side spots.
    5. 3pm — Uber back or continue to MAR (Museu de Arte do Rio) if you have art energy left.

Book the tickets for the combo day

Skip both queues — grab the AquaRio + Museu do Amanhã combo ticket, or book each separately. Weekends and school holidays sell out by mid-morning.

    What you'll actually see inside

AquaRio is built as a single circular path — no dead ends, no missed rooms. You start in the surface ecosystems (mangroves, tide-pools, Amazon flooded forest) and gradually descend through Atlantic reef zones into the deep ocean.

    • Mangue e Rios — Brazilian mangroves and Amazon river fish, including piranhas and pirarucu (one of the world's largest freshwater fish).
    • Costão Rochoso — rocky-shore ecosystem with octopus, moray eels and lobsters — the section marine biologists love most.
    • Ilhas Oceânicas — Fernando de Noronha and Trindade offshore reef life, all species you'd otherwise need a plane and PADI card to see.
    • Sea-turtle rehab tank — home to rescued green and hawksbill turtles awaiting release. AquaRio's rehab program has returned over 200 turtles to the wild.
    • The 3.5 million-litre Recife tank — the main show: nurse sharks, sand-tiger sharks, stingrays, groupers and 60+ reef species.
    • The 28 m curved shark tunnel — the finale, and the reason kids beg to come back.

    Behind-the-scenes and special experiences

AquaRio runs three add-on experiences that most tourists never notice:

    • Backstage tour (R$60 extra) — 30-min walk above the main tank, watch feeding prep, meet the biologists.
    • Sleep with the Sharks — kids-and-parents overnight in the shark tunnel. Books out months ahead but unforgettable.
    • Dive with the Sharks — certified divers can suit up and enter the main tank. R$1,200. Bookable directly at the aquarium.

    With kids specifically

    • Ideal age range: 3–12. Toddlers love the touch-pool; tweens love the shark tunnel.
    • Stroller storage available near entrance; interior is stroller-friendly.
    • Café inside is expensive and average — eat before or after at CADEG.
    • Adult supervision required on the shark tunnel viewing platforms.

    Ethics — the honest read

AquaRio is on the more responsible end of large aquariums: no cetaceans (dolphins, whales, orcas), a strong focus on Brazilian-coast species, and an active sea-turtle rescue and rehabilitation program that returns animals to the wild. The shark and ray program is captive and controversial, as with any large aquarium. If you're on the fence, the education value with kids is real; if captive marine life is a hard line for you, skip it and do the Museu do Amanhã half-day instead.

    Getting there & safety

Porto Maravilha was redeveloped for the 2016 Olympics and is one of the safer daytime zones in central Rio. Uber both ways is the move — public transport works (VLT light rail) but adds time. Do not walk from AquaRio into Centro after dark.

    FAQ

    Is AquaRio worth visiting?

Yes if you're traveling with kids, on a rainy day, or interested in South American marine life. AquaRio is the largest aquarium in South America (4.5 million liters, 350+ species) and one of the few big Rio attractions that's fully indoor and stroller-friendly. Adult visits without kids take ~90 min and are pleasant but not a top-5 Rio attraction.

How much are tickets in 2026?

Adults ~R$130, children 3–12 ~R$70, under-3 free. Combo tickets with the AquaRio + Museu do Amanhã cluster save ~20%. Skip-the-line online tickets are worth it on weekends and school holidays.

How long do you need at AquaRio?

Families with kids: 2–2.5 hours. Adults alone: 60–90 minutes. Add 30 min if you want the behind-the-scenes shark tunnel experience.

    Where is AquaRio?

In the revitalized Porto Maravilha district, a 5-min walk from Museu do Amanhã, MAR and Boulevard Olímpico. Uber from Ipanema is 20–30 min (R$40–60). Very safe by day; take Uber back after dark.

Can I combine AquaRio with other attractions?

Absolutely — it's the smartest combination in Rio. In a single half-day you can hit AquaRio, Museu do Amanhã, MAR (Museu de Arte do Rio), Boulevard Olímpico murals and lunch at CADEG or Cais do Valongo. See our combo itinerary below.

    Is AquaRio ethical?

AquaRio focuses on rescue, research and public education; it does not host dolphins, whales or other cetaceans. Species are largely Atlantic — sharks, rays, sea turtles rehabilitated on the Brazilian coast. It's on the more ethical end of large aquariums globally but remains a captive facility — a personal call.
