Best Hostels in Rio de Janeiro

Rio has hundreds of hostels and most of them are mediocre — converted Copacabana flats with 12-bed dorms and zero atmosphere. The dozen that actually deserve your booking are concentrated in four neighborhoods: Ipanema, Copacabana, Lapa and Santa Teresa. Each one delivers a different version of Rio.

This is the 2026 list, with real bed prices, the security details that matter, and the one question that decides everything: do you want beach mornings or samba nights, because no hostel in Rio gives you both well.

• First-timer, beach focus → Mango Tree (Ipanema) or El Misti (Ipanema).
• Solo female → Discovery Hostel (Glória) or Mango Tree.
• Party / nightlife → Books Hostel (Lapa) or Selina Lapa.

Ipanema — safest, prettiest, walkable to everything

If this is your first trip to Rio, book here. Posto 9 is two blocks away, the metro at General Osório opens up the rest of the city, and the streets stay lively until midnight without being chaotic.

Mango Tree Hostel

A renovated 1930s mansion two blocks from the beach. Garden, hammocks, female-only dorms, in-house yoga. Dorm R$110–140, private R$380. The breakfast is genuinely good — fresh pineapple, real coffee, eggs to order.

El Misti Hostel Ipanema

Bigger, more social, more international. Nightly caipirinha welcome, organized samba and favela trips, rooftop. Dorm R$95–125. Skip the 12-bed dorm if you sleep light — pick the 6-bed.

Bonita Ipanema Pousada & Hostel

Old-school Carioca pousada feel, pool, quietest of the three. Dorm R$80–100, privates from R$280. Best for travelers in their 30s who want hostel pricing without 22-year-old roommates.

Copacabana — best value, biggest range

Copacabana hostels are cheaper than Ipanema by R$20–40 a night and you still walk to the beach. The catch: the beach is longer, busier and (back from the sand) noisier. Stay between ruas Barata Ribeiro and Atlântica for the safest streets.

Injoy Hostel

Selina Copacabana

The chain hostel that nomads default to: dedicated coworking floor with reliable wifi, private cabin podcast booth, daily pilates. Dorm R$130, microsuite R$420. Day passes for the coworking from R$60.

Stone of a Beach Hostel

Family-run, quieter, by Posto 6 closer to Ipanema. Cheapest reliable dorm beds in the South Zone at R$65–80. No party scene, perfect for early surf mornings.

Lapa — for the nightlife, eyes open

Lapa is the samba capital, the Arcos da Lapa, the all-night dancefloors. Sleeping here means walking past Friday-night crowds to your door. Worth it if nightlife is the trip, risky if it isn't.

Books Hostel

The legendary party hostel in a graffitied mansion at the base of the Escadaria Selarón. Rooftop bar, sub-R$8 caipirinhas, samba on Mondays. Dorm R$80–110. Do not stay here if you want to sleep before 3am.

Selina Lapa

The grown-up Lapa option: better beds, soundproofed rooms, restaurant downstairs. Dorm R$120, private R$380. The trade-off is you're paying chain pricing for a chaotic neighborhood. See our Lapa samba nightlife guide.

Santa Teresa — bohemian, hilly, photogenic

Cobblestone streets, art studios, the yellow tram, sweeping views over Lapa and Centro. The hassle: it's a 15-min Uber from the beach and walking down the hill at night isn't recommended. Take the Bondinho de Santa Teresa during the day.

Casa Cool Beans

B&B-style boutique hostel — pool, breakfast on the terrace, hosts who personally book your favela tour. No dorms, privates only from R$420. The romantic Santa Teresa stay.

Discovery Hostel

Technically in Glória at the foot of Santa Teresa, walking distance to the Cinelândia metro. Strong female-only dorm, queer-friendly, fluent English reception. Dorm R$90–115.

What to look for when booking

• 24h reception — non-negotiable for late arrivals from GIG. See airport guide.
• Individual key-card lockers — not "communal storage room", which is just an open closet.
• Air conditioning, not "ceiling fan". Rio summers hit 40°C; fans aren't enough.
• Address ends in Ipanema / Leblon / Copacabana / Santa Teresa / Glória / Botafogo. Avoid "Centro" unless you have specific reasons; the area empties after work hours.
• Hostelworld rating above 8.5, with at least 300 recent reviews. Below that, you're gambling.
• Free cancellation until 48h before — Rio weather and plans both shift.

Hostel safety rules (the ones that matter)

• Never leave a phone on a charger overnight in a shared dorm. It will not be there at sunrise.
• Lock your passport, second card and emergency cash in the locker. Carry a daily card + R$100 cash only. See Rio safety guide.
• Don't tell strangers in the dorm exactly when you're flying out. Targeted hostel theft is rare but not zero.
• Uber back from Lapa after midnight — R$25, not "a 20-minute walk along the Arcos".
• Use the hostel's house WhatsApp to coordinate cabs — drivers know the address and street code.

When to book

• Carnaval (Feb/Mar) — book 6 months ahead minimum. 5–7 night packages, no refunds.
• Réveillon (Dec 27–Jan 2) — same. Copacabana hostels triple their nightly rate.
• Summer (Dec–Feb, outside the two above) — 4–6 weeks ahead for best dorms.
