    Rio in 48 Hours: The Perfect Weekend

    A weekend in Rio is the trickiest itinerary in South America — too short for day trips, too long for one obvious loop. The key is to anchor the trip in the South Zone, hit one mountain per day, and trade the third "must-see" for a single great meal.

    This is the hour-by-hour 48-hour Rio plan we'd give a friend — built around two arrivals (Friday night, Saturday morning), with the realistic timings, transport and reservations that make it actually happen.

    Quick answer: the 48-hour skeleton

    • Friday night arrival → drop bags, dinner at Aconchego Carioca or Garota de Ipanema.
    • Saturday → Ipanema beach morning, Sugarloaf sunset, Lapa samba.
    • Sunday → Christ the Redeemer at opening, Lagoa or Hippie Fair brunch, Copacabana sunset flight out.

    Before you land: book these three things

    1. Christ the Redeemer (Trem do Corcovado) — 8:00am Sunday slot. R$110 round-trip. Sells out in summer. See our how to get to Christ guide.
    2. Sugarloaf cable car (Bondinho) — Saturday 5:00pm. R$180 round-trip. Buy on the official Parque Bondinho site, not third-party.
    3. One reservation — Aprazível (Santa Teresa lunch) or Astor (Ipanema dinner). Both via WhatsApp or Sympla.

    Friday night — arrival

    8–10pm: GIG airport to Ipanema

    Take a pre-paid taxi from the official desk inside the terminal (R$140–170) or an Uber from the P3 ride-hail pickup zone (R$110–140, 50 min). See airport guide for the P3 routine.

    10:30pm: Late dinner

    Bar Garota de Ipanema (Vinícius de Moraes) for the Carioca classic and the bossa nova origin story. Skip if you're past 11pm — head to Lord Jim Pub or Bar Veloso instead. Order picanha and a stone-cold chopp.

    Saturday — Beach, Sugarloaf, Samba

    7:00am: Ipanema sunrise run or swim

    The ocean is at its calmest before 8am and the temperature is perfect. Run from Posto 9 to Leblon and back (5km), or rent an orange Bike Itaú for a wider loop.

    9:00am: Carioca breakfast

    10:30am–2pm: Beach time at Posto 9

    The South Zone's social-magnet beach square. Rent two chairs + umbrella from a barraqueiro (R$30, tip R$10), order chilled coconut water and grilled queijo coalho. See Rio beach etiquette.

    2:30pm: Lunch at CT Boucherie or Zazá Bistrô

    Either is the right move for a long Carioca Saturday lunch — Zazá for atmosphere, CT for the grilled meats. Budget R$180/person.

    4:30pm: Uber to Urca (15 min, R$35)

    5:00pm: Sugarloaf cable car

    Two stages: Morro da Urca first, then the summit. Time the second stage for sunset (~6:30pm in summer). Stay 45 minutes for the city lights coming on. The most photographed view in Brazilian tourism, and rightly so.

    8:30pm: Caipirinha at Bar Urca

    Open-air, kerb of the bay, sardine bolinhos. R$50 covers two caipirinhas + appetizers.

    10:30pm: Samba in Lapa

    Rio Scenarium (3 floors, live samba, R$60 cover) or Carioca da Gema (more local, R$30 cover). Uber both ways, never walk. See Lapa samba nightlife.

    Sunday — Christ, Lagoa, Departure

    7:00am: Pão de queijo + coffee in the hotel

    Eat light — the Corcovado train is bumpy.

    7:45am: Uber to Trem do Corcovado station (Cosme Velho)

    R$45, 20 min from Ipanema. Be at the gate 15 minutes before your 8:00am slot.

    8:00–10:30am: Christ the Redeemer

    Train climbs through Tijuca Forest (20 min), then a panoramic walkway to the statue. The 8am slot is the only one without crowds. Back at the base by 10:30.

    11:30am: Hippie Fair in Ipanema

    Sundays only at Praça General Osório. Hammocks, art, leather, food stalls. See Sunday in Rio.

    1:00pm: Lunch at Aprazível (Santa Teresa)

    Wood-fire grilled fish, tropical garden, the best lunch view in Rio. Reservations essential, budget R$250/person. Alternative: Palaphita Kitch on the Lagoa for caipirinhas with the Christ in the background. See Lagoa guide.

    4:00pm: Copacabana sunset stroll

    Last hour of Rio: walk Avenida Atlântica from Posto 6 toward the Copacabana Palace. Coconut water at a kiosk. The Atlantic, the Forte, the curve of the bay.

    6:00pm: Uber to GIG

    Allow 90 minutes minimum on a Sunday — beach-traffic returns clog Aterro. Use the GIG ride-hail pickup zone P3.

    Budget for 48 hours (2026)

    • Hostel dorm R$200 / mid-range hotel R$900 / boutique R$1,800 for 2 nights.
    • Attractions R$290 (Christ R$110 + Sugarloaf R$180).
