Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Guide
Written and reviewed by Lotte — Rio local, founder & editor of PlanRio · How we research · First published · Last reviewed
If Ipanema is Rio's living room, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is its backyard — a 2.4 km² saltwater lagoon below Corcovado, ringed by a flat 7.5 km path with no road crossings, a chain of small parks and dozens of waterfront kiosks. By 6am the runners and rowers are out; by sunset the west side fills with families, paddleboarders and that one helicopter doing tourist loops overhead.
Quick answer
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is a flat, free 7.5 km lakeside loop for walking, running and cycling, 5–10 minutes inland from Ipanema and Leblon. It is not for swimming and not a full-day sight — go early or in the hour before sunset, and pair it with Jardim Botânico or an Ipanema beach afternoon.
First-timers should walk a half-loop from Parque dos Patins and stop at a kiosk; runners and cyclists can do the whole 7.5 km circuit counter-clockwise; families head straight for the Parque dos Patins playground and pedal boats.

The honest verdict: Lagoa is worth it when you want movement and open space between busier attractions. It is not worth crossing the city for a quick photograph, and it is not a substitute for the ocean. Choose the section that fits your base and your pace.
The 7.5 km loop, by segment
The path circles the whole lagoon without crossing a road, with kilometre markers running counter-clockwise from Parque dos Patins. The west side (Leblon/Gávea) is quieter and more shaded; the east side is busier with more kiosks. Pick your entry point by where you are staying.
Parque dos Patins (west / Leblon side)
The easiest all-round base: bike rental, the largest cluster of kiosks, a playground, open lawn and the helipad. Go counter-clockwise from here to keep Corcovado on your right for sunset. Enter from Leblon or western Ipanema — about a 5–10 minute walk.
Ipanema side (Corte do Cantagalo)
Handy if you are staying near General Osório or Nossa Senhora da Paz. Links a Lagoa walk directly to Ipanema beach, so you can do the lagoon first and the sand after. General Osório metro is the closest station.
Jardim Botânico / Gávea (inland side)
The practical pairing with the Botanical Garden and Parque Lage. Access points and road crossings here need more attention than the inner lakeside path, so keep children close.
Cantagalo (east side)
The quietest stretch, reached from Copacabana through the Cantagalo tunnel/lift. Calm for a purposeful walk or run; thinner crowds mean it is the section to leave first as the light goes.
Best starting point
Parque dos Patins, on Avenida Borges de Medeiros near Leblon — bike rental, the largest cluster of kiosks, a playground and the helipad. Head counter-clockwise to keep Corcovado on your right at sunset.
Walk, run or cycle?
Walk if it is your first visit. You can stop at viewpoints, step aside easily and turn back when the light or weather changes. A half-loop plus a ride app is perfectly reasonable.
Run early, especially in the warm months — the route is exposed and heat builds fast. Bring water, use sun protection and watch for uneven transitions around the access points.
Cycle only if you are comfortable in mixed traffic. The path is shared with walkers, runners, children and other riders: keep right, slow down at congested sections and never assume someone has heard your bell.
Bikes, boats and gear
- Bike Itaú / Bike Rio (Tembici app) — around R$10/day, docking stations spaced around the loop. Best value; see our Bike Itaú guide.
- Private rental kiosks (Parque dos Patins) — better bikes and tandems by the hour; check the current rate at the kiosk.
- Pedal boats (pedalinho) — the classic Lagoa activity for couples and kids, hired by the half-hour.
- SUP & kayak — paddle operators run from Parque dos Patins; see our kayak & SUP guide.
- Rowing — lakeside clubs offer drop-in lessons; book ahead.
Prefer a guide and a quality bike?
A small-group bike tour links the Lagoa loop with Ipanema, Leblon and the Aterro — a flat, easy ride with the best photo stops built in and the route and equipment sorted for you. If you would rather ride independently, the Bike Itaú day pass above is the cheaper choice.

Families, accessibility & facilities
With kids: Parque dos Patins is the family hub — playground, open lawn, pedal boats and space to teach a child to cycle on the flat. Keep little ones out of the bike line.
Accessibility: the main lakeside path is flat and paved, so most of the loop is workable for wheelchairs and prams. Kerbs, ramps and crossings vary at the access points; enter near a park (Parque dos Patins is smoothest) and see our accessible Rio guide for transport.
Water, toilets & shade: kiosks around the loop sell water and snacks (carry cash or use Pix — many won't take foreign cards), and there is a playground and open space at Parque dos Patins. Public toilets are limited, so plan around the kiosks and parks. Shade is patchy, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water before you start the far side.
Best kiosks (quiosques)
Palaphita Kitch
The famous one — bamboo lounges by the water, an Amazonian-cocktail menu, and Corcovado in view. Sunset crowds are heavy, so arrive by 5pm.
Arab da Lagoa
Lebanese-Brazilian mezze, best for a longer dinner with live music on some evenings.
Quiosque do Português
No-frills classic — caldo verde, bacalhau pastries and a cold beer at locals' prices.
Morning coffee
Several kiosks open from around 7am for coffee, açaí and sandwiches — the natural pairing with an early loop or run.
Sunset playbook
Lagoa's sunset is unusual in Rio: the sun drops behind Corcovado, lighting Christ the Redeemer in gold for about 20 minutes. The best vantage is the west side between Parque dos Patins and Parque do Cantagalo. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, grab a drink from any kiosk, and plan your exit for around dusk. See best sunset spots.
Safety & context
Use ordinary Rio city awareness: keep your phone secure between photos, avoid isolated outer pavements and don't leave belongings unattended while exercising. The lagoon is open public space, so how busy each stretch feels changes by time and section.
Late afternoon has the best light, but first-time visitors should plan the exit before dark and leave from an active park or avenue using a ride app. If a stretch feels empty, turn back toward a busier section rather than pushing on.
If the weather turns
After rain the painted surfaces and leaves get slippery, and mosquitoes gather near the still water at dusk — repellent helps. If it is actually raining, save the loop for a clear early morning or late afternoon and swap in a rain-friendly plan nearby: the covered glasshouses and café at Jardim Botânico, or the mansion galleries at Parque Lage. In high summer, run before 9am before the humidity makes the exposed path brutal.
Seasonal events
- December — floating Christmas tree. Lit from the first Saturday of December into early January. See Rio Christmas guide.
- January–February — pre-Carnaval blocos. Street parties parade around the path; see pre-Carnaval guide.
- Sundays year-round — the east-side road closes to cars for much of the day, and bikes and skates take over.
Common mistakes
- • Starting a full loop without water. Buy it before you begin — kiosks on the far side may be shut.
- • Stopping for photos in the bike line. Step fully aside first; keep right when walking.
- • Assuming every dock has a working bike. Check live availability in the app and inspect the bike.
- • Trying to swim. Lagoa is for shore-based recreation; use the ocean beaches to swim.
- • Treating it as a headline sight. Combine it with a neighbourhood rather than crossing the city for a single view.
Local expert tips
- • Go counter-clockwise from Parque dos Patins so Corcovado stays on your right for the gold-hour light.
- • Carry cash or Pix. Many kiosks don't take foreign cards, and the ride-app pickup is easiest from a named park.
- • Do the loop, then the beach. Enter from the Ipanema side and finish with a swim at Posto 9 rather than trying to swim in the lagoon.
- • Beat the heat and the crowds by running before 9am in summer; the exposed path bakes by mid-morning.

FAQ
How long is the Lagoa loop and how long does it take?
The loop is about 7.5 km, flat and paved, without crossing a single road. Reckon on roughly 90 minutes to walk it, or 30–40 minutes to cycle it — but most first-time visitors enjoy one section rather than completing the whole circuit.
How do I get to Lagoa from Ipanema, Leblon or Copacabana?
From Ipanema or Leblon it is a 5–10 minute walk inland (General Osório is the nearest metro). From Copacabana, cut through the Cantagalo tunnel to reach the east side. Parque dos Patins on the west side is the easiest all-round entry point, with bike rental and kiosks.
Can I rent a bike at Lagoa?
Yes. Bike Itaú / Bike Rio docking stations (the orange Tembici bikes) ring the loop and are the cheapest option via the Tembici app; private kiosks at Parque dos Patins rent better bikes, tandems and pedal boats. Availability and prices change, so check the app on the day and inspect brakes, tyres and seat height before you start.
Is Lagoa good with children?
Yes — Parque dos Patins has a playground, open lawn and pedal boats, and the flat path suits prams and small bikes. Keep children close on the shared path, because runners, cyclists and scooters all move at different speeds.
Is Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas accessible for wheelchairs and prams?
The main lakeside path is flat and paved, which makes most of the loop workable for wheelchairs and prams. Kerbs, ramps and crossings vary at the access points, so choose an entrance near a park (Parque dos Patins is the smoothest) and see our accessible Rio guide for transport.
Is Lagoa safe, including after dark?
The busy sections stay active into the evening, but conditions vary by stretch and time. For a first visit, finish around dusk, stay on the main shared path, keep your phone secure between photos, and use a ride app from an active park or avenue rather than walking unfamiliar side streets.
Can you swim in Lagoa?
No. The lagoon water is not for swimming — pollution levels vary and fish kills happen after heavy rain. Rowing, kayaking, SUP and pedal boats are fine; for a swim, go to Ipanema or Leblon beach.
What is the giant Christmas tree at Lagoa?
The Árvore de Natal da Lagoa is a floating Christmas tree lit each December, traditionally from the first Saturday of the month into early January. It is free to watch from any lakeside kiosk — see our Rio Christmas guide for the current lighting date.
