Parque Lage: The Complete Rio Guide

Built in 1849 for the Lage family and reimagined in the 1920s by Italian architect Mario Vodrel, the pink-and-white mansion of Parque Lage sits improbably at the foot of Corcovado, wrapped in 348,000 m² of Atlantic Forest. Since 1975 the building has housed the EAV Parque Lage (School of Visual Arts), which is why you'll walk past art students painting under the arched galleries surrounding the mansion's iconic pool courtyard.

What to do at Parque Lage

• The mansion courtyard. The Instagram shot: an open-air pool ringed by white arched galleries, with Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer framed above the roofline. Best light 8–10am.

• Free art exhibitions. The EAV Parque Lage galleries rotate contemporary Brazilian art every 6–8 weeks. Always free.
• Forest trails. A short loop (30 min) passes a small artificial cave, an aquarium ruin and a waterfall. Marmoset monkeys and toucans are almost guaranteed sightings before 10am.

Plage Café — the courtyard brunch

The café inside the mansion pool courtyard is one of Rio's most beautiful eating spots and the reason many Cariocas visit at all. Sit at the arched-gallery tables for the postcard view, or on the poolside for direct sun. Brunch service runs Saturday and Sunday 10am–2pm and books up — reserve 2–3 days ahead or arrive by 9am for walk-in seating. Weekday mornings are almost always walk-in.

The Corcovado hike from Parque Lage

The Trilha do Corcovado is one of Rio's classic hikes — 2 to 3 hours up through Tijuca rainforest to the road at Paineiras, then the mandatory R$25 shuttle to Christ the Redeemer's summit. It's ~700m of elevation gain over 3.5km, mostly steep single-track, with one 8m rope-assisted scramble near the top.

Never hike this trail alone. Assaults have been reported on solo hikers in past years. Every reputable local guide charges R$120–180 per person, includes the shuttle fee, and starts at 8am to avoid heat and afternoon storms. Wear grippy shoes, bring 2L of water and start the descent by 2pm.

How to get to Parque Lage

• Uber: 10–15 min from Ipanema/Copacabana (R$15–25). Enter "Parque Lage" as the destination.
• Bus: 409, 410, 572 stop directly at the Rua Jardim Botânico 414 gate.
• Walking: 15 min from Jardim Botânico's main gate; 30–40 min from Ipanema via Lagoa.
• Metro: Nearest station is General Osório (Ipanema) — 10 minutes by Uber from there.

Best time to visit Parque Lage

Weekday, 8–10am is the sweet spot: golden light on the mansion, café tables available, forest cool and the monkeys active. By 11am the tour groups arrive and the courtyard fills with photographers.
