Bike Itaú Rio: the tourist guide that matches the current app

Written and reviewed by Lotte — Rio local, founder & editor of PlanRio · How we research · First published · Last reviewed

    Quick answer

Bike Itaú remains Rio's easiest docked bike share, but the old R$10 day-pass advice is obsolete. Visitors should use the Bike Itaú app, choose Avulso for one short ride or Lazer for up to eight rides across 48 hours, and check all live charges before unlocking.

The orange bikes are genuinely useful along the South Zone: we use them for flat, point-to-point rides where the seafront ciclovia (separated cycle path) does most of the navigation. They are less convincing as an all-day rental. The plan limits, per-minute extras and need to find an open dock reward short hops, not one uninterrupted sightseeing ride.

This page previously quoted a R$10 24-hour pass, told readers to download the Tembici app and described 600 stations. Those details no longer match the operator's current Rio page. The guide below was rechecked on 6 September 2026.

Bike Itaú Rio at a glance

Correct appBike Itaú: Alugar Bicicletas — choose Rio de Janeiro in the app
    Operating windowCurrently published as 05:00–00:00
NetworkAbout 430 stations; live bike and dock availability is in the app
AvulsoFrom R$7.90: one conventional-bike ride of up to 15 minutes
LazerFrom R$32.90 for 48h: up to 4 conventional-bike rides per day
Electric bikesAvailable at selected stations; the extra charge depends on the plan
Best visitor useShort, flat rides along Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, Lagoa and Flamengo

Current visitor prices: what the small print means

PlanIncluded usePublished price at reviewWatch for
AvulsoOne mechanical-bike trip, up to 15 minutesFrom R$7.90R$20 temporary card hold; R$0.50/min after 15 minutes
Lazer48h; up to 4 mechanical-bike trips/day (8 total), 60 minutes each on weekdays and 2h at weekendsFrom R$32.90R$0.39/min over the allowance; extra ride R$7.90

Our take: Avulso only makes sense for a very short A-to-B hop. Lazer is the tourist plan worth comparing for a beach-and-Lagoa weekend, but it is not unlimited. Bike Itaú labels these as prices “from” and can change plan rules; the app's purchase summary is the final word on the day.

Can a foreign visitor sign up?

    1. Download Bike Itaú: Alugar Bicicletas, not an old third-party map or a similarly named app.
    2. Create an account with email, or continue with Apple or Google, then choose Rio de Janeiro.
    3. Open Planos e pagamentos, read the allowance and extra-charge summary, and add a payment card.
    4. Buy the plan before walking to a station. Cards that cannot process Brazilian reais may be declined, so bring a second card.
    5. Use the app map to pick a station with both a working bike and a practical return station nearby.

The official flow does not say that every foreign card will work, and we would not promise that you can bypass every identity field: the form shown to you is the authority. If signup fails, do not keep retrying beside a busy road with your phone exposed; move into a café or hotel lobby and use the in-app help.

How to unlock and return without an accidental charge

    1. Inspect tyres, saddle and both brakes before you scan. If something looks wrong, choose another bike.
    2. Tap the unlock option and scan the QR code on the bike. Pull it free only after the dock shows the green release light and sounds.
    3. Before finishing, check the app for an open dock. Full stations are common at the beach around sunset.
    4. Push the bike firmly into the dock. Wait for the green light and sound, then confirm the trip has ended in your ride history.

The three rides we would choose

    1. Ipanema to Leblon: the easy first ride

Stay on the seafront cycle path between Arpoador, Ipanema and Leblon. The route is flat, easy to understand and lined with stations. Go early, before heat and pedestrian traffic build, and treat the beach crossings as junctions rather than a private racetrack.

    2. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas: best for a loop

The lagoon circuit is the most forgiving sightseeing ride: mostly flat, away from fast traffic and with broad views towards Christ the Redeemer. A Lazer allowance works better than Avulso here because the loop will exceed 15 minutes. See our Lagoa guide.

    3. Flamengo to Botafogo: the Sugarloaf-view ride

Use the separated path through Aterro do Flamengo and around Botafogo Bay. It is scenic and practical in daylight; the open park feels very different after dark. On Sundays the leisure area is livelier but also full of runners, children and skaters, so slow down.

Want the route and bike handled for you?

The small-group conventional-bike tour offers three route lengths from Copacabana. The e-bike option is a separate guided product connecting Rio's historic and waterfront sights. Check the exact route, meeting point, inclusions and live total before booking.

When Bike Itaú is not worth it

    Use it when…

    • You can stay on a familiar separated path.
    • Your ride fits the plan's time allowance.
    • The app shows bikes now and docks near your finish.
    • You are travelling light in daylight.

    Skip it when…

    • Heavy rain, strong wind or standing water affects the path.
    • You need to carry luggage or cannot comfortably signal and brake.
    • Your route depends on fast traffic or unfamiliar Centro junctions.
    • You cannot find an open dock near the destination.

    Common mistakes tourists make

    • Buying Avulso for a sightseeing loop: its included mechanical-bike ride is only 15 minutes.
    • Assuming Lazer means unlimited: it currently caps included rides per day and charges extra time.
    • Unlocking the first bike: a quick brake-and-tyre check is easier than reporting a fault mid-ride.
    • Planning only the pickup: find a second return station in case your preferred dock is full.
    • Walking away too quickly: wait for the green light and verify the completed trip in the app.

    Local expert tips

    • Set up payment on reliable Wi-Fi, then screenshot the plan rules you bought.
    • Choose early morning for cooler air and fewer pedestrians; avoid the strongest midday sun.
    • Keep right, signal before overtaking and expect pedestrians to step across the path without looking.
    • Carry water and sunscreen, but keep valuables secured rather than loose in the bike's front holder.
    • If the app, dock or payment is the part you dislike, a guided ride is the calmer—though much dearer—alternative.

    Frequently asked questions

What is Bike Itaú in Rio?

Bike Itaú is Rio's docked bike-share system, operated by Tembici and sponsored by Itaú. The operator currently publishes roughly 430 stations. Use the Bike Itaú app to see live bikes and empty docks, unlock a bicycle and confirm that a trip has ended.

    Can tourists use Bike Itaú?

Yes. You do not need to be an Itaú customer. Create an account in the Bike Itaú app, choose Rio de Janeiro, add a payment card and buy a Rio plan. International cards can still be declined if they cannot process Brazilian-real transactions, so set the app up before you reach a station and keep a backup card.

How much does Bike Itaú cost in Rio?

At our 6 September 2026 check, the operator listed Avulso from R$7.90 for one conventional-bike ride of up to 15 minutes, and Lazer from R$32.90 for 48 hours with up to four included conventional-bike rides per day. Extra time, extra rides and electric bikes cost more, so read the live plan summary before paying.

Which Bike Itaú app should I download?

Download Bike Itaú: Alugar Bicicletas for Rio de Janeiro. Older advice telling Rio visitors to use only the general Tembici app is out of date. The operator's current help centre assigns the Bike Itaú app to Rio, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Porto Alegre and Salvador.

Does Bike Itaú Rio have electric bikes?

Yes, selected Rio stations have electric bikes, but the charge depends on your plan and begins separately from the conventional-bike allowance. On the current Lazer plan, the published electric-bike charge starts from the first minute. Check the app for the exact rate and battery availability before unlocking.

Is Bike Itaú safe for visitors?

It is a good visitor option on Rio's separated seafront paths, the Lagoa loop and Aterro do Flamengo. It is a poor choice if you are not confident at junctions, need to improvise through Centro traffic or plan to ride after dark. Inspect the brakes and tyres before unlocking and keep your phone away once moving.

What is the best first Bike Itaú route?

For an easy first ride, use the protected seafront path between Ipanema and Leblon or make a loop around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Both have frequent stations and simple navigation. Check that your intended finish has empty docks before setting off, because a full station does not end your trip.
