Parque das Ruínas is the roofless shell of the former mansion of socialite Laurinda Santos Lobo, once the center of Rio's bohemian and intellectual scene in the early 1900s. After decades of abandonment the city preserved the ruined walls and inserted a modern steel-and-glass staircase inside, turning it into a cultural center with rotating art exhibitions, a small café, and a rooftop viewing platform that looks straight out over Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf, downtown Rio and the Bay of Botafogo. Admission is free, it's rarely crowded, and it's the single best viewpoint in Santa Teresa.
