Urca blocos are tiny by Rio standards and the setting does the work: flat water on one side, the morro above, military-academy palms along the road. A good pick for a mellow second bloco, and easy to combine with sunset on the Urca sea wall afterwards.

Banda Bandida forms at 16:00 on Rua Inhangá, the short street between Copacabana's metro and the beach. It is a small banda in one of the densest, most mixed parts of Copacabana — bars, old hotels and the Inhangá square all within a block. Praça Serzedelo Corrêa is the shaded residential square two blocks back from Copacabana beach, and this bloco forms there at 16:00. Back-street Copacabana blocos are a different experience from the Avenida Atlântica ones: trees, benches, neighbourhood bars and a crowd of a few thousand rather than tens of thousands. Easy to reach from any Copacabana hotel on foot.

That said, the moving crowd, heat and sound system are not right for every animal: follow the organiser's current rules and leave at the first sign of stress.

An 08:00 Sunday bloco in Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz — the tree-filled square in the middle of Ipanema, directly above its own Line 4 metro station. An obvious choice for a first bloco or for anyone travelling with children.

Afternoon start, large crowd, and a walkable route back to Botafogo metro along the water. One of the best-looking settings of any large bloco, and better organised than its size suggests.

An 18:00 Carnaval Friday bloco in Largo do Machado — the big shaded square with a church at one end and a metro station underneath. Evening blocos on a metro-side square are the most practical option in the whole directory: you arrive by train, you stand under trees, and you go home by train.
