Rio doesn't make most honeymoon lists, which is precisely why it's a great one. You skip the cookie-cutter overwater-bungalow circuit, you get a city instead of a resort, and the romantic moments are built into the geography — sunset at Arpoador, dusk over Sugarloaf, the way the Christ statue lights up across the bay every evening. This is the locally-built version, written from years of recommending Rio to honeymooning couples.
Where to stay (in honest order)
Fasano Ipanema — the best service in Rio. Rooftop pool with the postcard view, Philippe Starck design, world-class breakfast. R$3,500–6,000/night. Worth every real for the honeymoon.
Belmond Copacabana Palace — the 1923 heritage choice. Old Hollywood glamour, the famous black-and-white pool, Cipriani dinner. R$3,000–8,000/night. Less private than Fasano but the brand and history are unique.
Janeiro Hotel Leblon — the new-design favourite. Beachfront Leblon (quieter than Ipanema), excellent rooftop bar, smaller property. R$2,800–5,000/night.
Mama Ruisa (Santa Teresa) — only 8 rooms, garden setting, very private. R$1,800–3,500/night. Best for couples who want a non-beach, character-driven base.

The 7-day honeymoon itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival, settle in, dinner at Oro or Olympe (both Michelin), nightcap on the hotel rooftop.
Day 2 — Christ the Redeemer in the morning, Santa Teresa walk, lunch at Aprazível (book the terrace, ask for a view table). Sunset at Arpoador — see our sunset spots ranking.

Extending: Rio + Ilha Grande or Búzios
The couples who come back happiest add 3–4 days at a beach destination after the city. Two clear options:
- Ilha Grande — car-free island, untouched beaches, jungle hikes. 2.5 h drive + 30 min ferry from Rio. Stay at Sagu Mini Resort or Pousada Naturalia.

When to go for a honeymoon
May–June is the honeymoon sweet spot — dry, warm (25–28°C), off-peak prices, low crowds. September–October is the second-best window. What to splurge on (and where to save)
Splurge: the hotel (your room view will define the trip), one Michelin dinner, the sunset helicopter, a private boat day. Save: daytime transport (Uber, not private driver), most lunches (kiosks and botecos are better than the touristy beachfront restaurants anyway), tours (the city is walkable enough that group tours add nothing).
