How to get to Sugarloaf Mountain
By Uber or taxi
For a direct ride, enter "Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar" at Av. Pasteur 520, Urca. Compare the current app quote or authorised taxi fare from your actual pickup point; traffic and demand affect the journey. Plan your return and confirm the pickup location rather than assuming a car will be waiting outside.
By bus
The park's official access directions describe bus connections from the centre, Copacabana and Botafogo metro. Walking from Botafogo metro
Walking via Av. Pasteur is an option if the distance, heat and your available time suit you. Check the route from your station exit and allow a margin before your planned visit. For a return after dark, consider an authorised taxi or app ride instead of unfamiliar, quiet stretches on foot.
The cable car experience (Bondinho)
The Bondinho's history dates to 1912. Today's enclosed, glass-walled cable cars make the two-stage ride part of the appeal. Follow staff boarding instructions and allow for queues rather than building your itinerary around a guaranteed departure interval:
- Stage 1: Praia Vermelha base → Morro da Urca (220m). 3 min. The first wow moment.
- Stage 2: Morro da Urca → Pão de Açúcar (396m). 3 min. You can see Christ the Redeemer if it's clear.
Sunset timing — get this right
One of Rio's most memorable views is the change from daylight to city lights. Aim to reach the base roughly 90 minutes before the sunset for your actual date, allowing more time on busy days. Plan by season, then check the day:
- Summer (Dec–Feb): Longer evenings can suit an afternoon visit; account for holiday demand.
- Autumn (Mar–May): Move your plan earlier as daylight shortens; a summer arrival time may be too late.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): Plan an earlier afternoon visit around the shorter days and last-admission rules.
- Spring (Sep–Nov): Daylight lengthens, but the same arrival time will not fit every date.

Hiking Morro da Urca for free
You can reach the first peak, Morro da Urca, by the free walking trail. Compare that with the separate technical climb to Sugarloaf below before choosing your route; a guided climb has its own costs and requirements.
Pista Cláudio Coutinho + Trilha do Morro da Urca
Start at Praia Vermelha. Walk 800m on the flat coastal Pista Cláudio Coutinho, then take the marked trail up the back of Morro da Urca. 45–60 min, moderate, single uphill section with chains. Free.
Costão do Pão de Açúcar (technical)
The Costão route reaches the Sugarloaf summit and includes rock climbing. Treat it as a guided climbing activity, separate from the ordinary Morro da Urca walking trail. If comparing operators such as Rio Adventures or Rio Hiking, request the exact route, current quote, instructor qualifications, equipment and descent arrangements. Do not assume a harness or cable-car return is included without written confirmation.

Do not confuse Rio's two cable cars
The Bondinho at Sugarloaf is the operating visitor attraction described here. The public-transit Teleférico do Complexo do Alemão is a different system and remains out of service; reported reopening dates have repeatedly moved.

- Mureta da Urca (street level) — Continue through the neighbourhood for a ground-level view with the rock behind you; allow time for the walk rather than treating it as an immediate stop outside the cable car.
Food, drinks and concerts at the top
Both peaks have places to eat and drink. Morro da Urca has restaurants, snack stops and an amphitheatre; Clássico Beach Club is on Pão de Açúcar, the second peak. Check the park's food and shop directory for the current venues and menus. For concerts or a special sunset event, check the official programme and whether a separate event ticket is required; ordinary cable-car admission does not promise a show or meal.
