How to get to Sugarloaf Mountain

By Uber or taxi

Easiest option. From Ipanema R$25–40, from Centro R$20–30. Ask for "Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar" or "Estação do Teleférico, Urca." Returning at night is straightforward — plenty of Ubers wait outside.

By bus

Lines 511 and 512 from Copacabana/Ipanema stop at the cable car base. Bus 107 connects from Centro and Botafogo. R$4.70 with a Riocard.

Walking from Botafogo metro

Pleasant 25-minute walk via Av. Pasteur along the bay. Safe daytime; take an Uber back at night.

The cable car experience (Bondinho)

The original 1912 Bondinho was the world's third cable car. The current cars (2008) are Swiss-built, glass-walled, hold 65 people, and depart every 20 minutes. The two-stage ride is part of the appeal:

• Stage 1: Praia Vermelha base → Morro da Urca (220m). 3 min. The first wow moment.
• Stage 2: Morro da Urca → Pão de Açúcar (396m). 3 min. You can see Christ the Redeemer if it's clear.

Sunset timing — get this right

The single best Rio experience for many visitors. Arrive at the base 90 minutes before sunset:

• Summer (Dec–Feb): Sun sets ~6:40 pm. Arrive 5:00 pm.

Yes — you can reach the first peak (220m) on foot without paying. Two routes:

Pista Cláudio Coutinho + Trilha do Morro da Urca

Start at Praia Vermelha. Walk 800m on the flat coastal Pista Cláudio Coutinho, then take the marked trail up the back of Morro da Urca. 45–60 min, moderate, single uphill section with chains. Free.

Caminho da Costa (technical)

Bouldering-and-trail combination, only with a guide. Rio Adventures and Rio Hiking run group climbs from R$280. Includes harness — you'll need it for two short rock pitches.
