Pedra Bonita — the easy classic
Trailhead & access
Drive or Uber to the Rampa de Voo Livre (paragliding ramp) on Estrada das Canoas, São Conrado. From Ipanema/Leblon: 25–35 min, R$50–70 Uber. The trail starts at the back of the parking lot — well-signed and impossible to miss.
The hike
25 minutes of moderate uphill on a wide dirt path through Atlantic forest. The final 5 minutes are steeper with a short rope-assisted scramble. Summit is flat and wide — easily fits 50 people.
The view
360°: Pedra da Gávea looms to the north, Ipanema and Leblon to the east, the long São Conrado / Barra coastline to the west, and Christ the Redeemer in the distance. Sunset is excellent but crowded.
Bonus: paragliding

Pedra do Telégrafo — the viral cliff
Trailhead & access
Located in Barra de Guaratiba, deep in Rio's far west zone. Drive or Uber from Ipanema: 75–90 min, R$120–160 each way. The trailhead is at Praia do Inferno, in the Pedra Branca state park. Free entry.
The hike
50–60 minutes up. Steep from the start; the middle section has rope-assisted rocky sections that are easy in dry weather, sketchy after rain. Wear proper trail shoes. The trail is well-trodden and impossible to lose.
The photo trick
The famous "hanging off a cliff" shot is taken from a low angle. The rock juts out about 2 meters from a flat platform — there's solid ground a meter below. Lie down with arms outstretched; photographer kneels at the platform edge shooting upward. The drop you see in the photo is real (200m+ behind), but you're nowhere near it. Several local "photographers" wait at the summit and shoot you for R$20 — fine if you're solo.
Beating the queue
By 9am on weekends, the photo queue is 60–120 min. Two solutions: (1) start hiking at 5:30am for sunrise — you'll have it to yourself, or (2) go midweek. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are unbearable.
Combine with nearby beaches
