Rio Marathon 2027: Dates, How to Get a Bib, Course & Hotels

    Quick answer

The Maratona do Rio 2027 42K is on Sunday 30 May 2027, starting at Praia da Reserva in Barra da Tijuca from around 05:30 and finishing at Aterro do Flamengo. The festival runs 27–30 May (5K, 10K, 21K, 42K). Bibs are sold only through Go Dream: a finisher pre-sale (closed), a free public lottery, rising price lots, and Itaú or travel-agency packages. Water appears roughly every 3 km and the 42K cut-off is six hours.

Rio rewards the runner who looks up without forgetting the watch. The 2027 route again stitches Barra, São Conrado, Niemeyer, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo and Centro into one long coastal tour. Our honest take: it is spectacular, but the first half's rollers and the exposed late avenues make it more demanding than the “flat beach marathon” label suggests — and with roughly 70,000 runners across four distances, getting a bib is now a planning exercise of its own.

    Expo week

Casa Maratona, the expo and bib pickup run from roughly Tuesday 25 May to Saturday 29 May 2027 at Marina da Glória. Confirm your slot when you register.

How to get a bib for the Rio Marathon 2027

Maratona do Rio is the largest road-running festival in Latin America, and entries no longer simply sit on sale until race week. Here are the five legitimate routes into 2027, in the order they open.

    1

Register only through Go Dream, the official ticketing partner

Entries for Maratona do Rio 2027 are sold at godream.com.br (Dream Factory / Spiridon organise the event). There is no legitimate resale market: transfers and third-party bib sales are not recognised, and a bib bought from a stranger will not be handed over at Casa Maratona.

Rule of thumb: if a site is not Go Dream or the official maratonadorio.com.br page, walk away.

    2

Route 1 · Finisher priority (already closed for 2027)

On 42K race day 2026 the organiser opened a small pre-sale for that year's marathon finishers. The 42K kit without a shirt sold at R$383.90 in that first lot. This route is closed for 2027 — but note it for 2028: finishing one edition is the cheapest, most certain way into the next.

    3

Route 2 · The public lottery (sorteio) — the main door for most runners

As in 2026, the majority of 2027 slots are expected to be distributed via a free-to-enter lottery, announced a few months before race week. You register interest in a window, results are drawn, and successful entrants then have a short deadline to pay for the kit. Miss the payment window and the slot is released.

Action: subscribe to the official newsletter and follow @maratonadoriooficial so you catch the lottery window.

    4

Route 3 · Paid lots after the lottery

Slots not taken up after the draw are usually sold in escalating price lots (lote 1, lote 2, and so on) until sold out. Prices rise with each lot, so a fast decision saves real money. The 5K, 10K and 21K generally follow the same lot pattern with lower prices.

    5

    Route 4 · Bank and partner pre-sales

Itaú Uniclass customers have had an exclusive pre-sale with roughly 20% off across distances. If you hold a qualifying Brazilian account, this is often the earliest guaranteed entry outside the finisher lot.

    6

    Route 5 · Travel-agency and international packages

The organiser accredits travel agencies that bundle a guaranteed bib with hotel and transfers. It costs more than a bare entry, but it is the most reliable option for international runners who cannot risk a lottery — and it removes the race-morning transfer problem to Praia da Reserva.

    7

What you need ready at checkout

Full legal name exactly as on your passport or ID, date of birth, CPF or passport number, T-shirt size, estimated finish time (this sets your wave), emergency contact, and a card that works for Brazilian transactions. Errors in name or date of birth are painful to fix later.

    8

After you are in: the pre-race paperwork

You must complete the health/responsibility term and any medical declaration on the athlete platform before pickup, and book a Casa Maratona collection time slot. Third-party collection is only possible if you authorise it in the platform in advance — once authorised, you can no longer collect the bib yourself.

Where to pick up your Rio Marathon bib

The event calls bib collection retirada de kit. Collection is in person at Casa Maratona, Marina da Glória, during race week at a booked time slot; the official athlete platform controls third-party authorisation.

    Where to collect

Casa Maratona inside the Marina da Glória pavilion, Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, s/n, Glória. Use Glória metro station; there is no expo parking.

    When to collect

Expect a Tuesday-to-Saturday window (roughly 25–29 May 2027), with the 42K closing earliest on the Saturday afternoon. Confirm your exact slot on the athlete platform.

    What to bring

Photo ID or passport, your registration QR code, your bib number and the signed responsibility term. Turn up inside the time slot you selected.

    Third-party pickup

Allowed only after authorisation in the athlete platform. The nominated collector receives a QR code and must show photo ID; once authorised, the runner cannot collect personally.

    The honest course review

This review combines the official point-to-point route with the practical realities of running Rio's coast: wind, tunnel approaches, sparse early support and the heat that builds after sunrise.

    1

Praia da Reserva and Barra: quiet, dark and exposed

The point-to-point race starts beside Reserva beach before sunrise, again in 2027. The first kilometres feel spacious, but sea wind and humidity make goal pace deceptively expensive. Crowds are thin here, so settle into rhythm rather than chase adrenaline.

Verdict: beautiful opening, but protect effort — not pace.

    2

Joatinga, São Conrado and Niemeyer: the real work

The route uses Ponte da Joatinga, Elevado das Bandeiras, the Lagoa–Barra corridor and Avenida Niemeyer. Rio is marketed as flat; this course is not pancake-flat. The ramps and tunnel approaches reward conservative pacing before the South Zone.

    3

Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana: the emotional high

The beachfront run along Avenida Delfim Moreira, Vieira Souto and Atlântica is the postcard section, and it is where spectator energy finally arrives. It is also fully exposed once the sun is up. Run the tangents and keep drinking even when the view makes you forget.

    4

Botafogo, Flamengo and Centro: mentally longer than it looks

After Túnel Novo and Túnel do Pasmado the course runs past Botafogo Bay, into Aterro and through a Centro out-and-back before returning to the finish. The roads flatten, but the late exposed kilometres and turns drain momentum.

    5

    The honest verdict

Maratona do Rio 2027 is a destination marathon first and a PB course second: world-class coastal scenery, an unforgettable South Zone passage and a flat finish, offset by early rollers, long exposed avenues, humidity and a start line far from the tourist neighbourhoods.

Aid stations, hydration and medical help

Support on the 42K is dense by Latin American standards. The exact 2026 markers below are the best available planning reference until the 2027 athlete guide is published — carry the fuel you trained with regardless.

    Water and toilets

In 2026 water and toilets were at the start, the finish and km 3.2, 6.2, 9.2, 11.8, 14.3, 17.9, 20.4, 23.6, 27.9, 30.5, 33.6, 36.5 and 39 — roughly every three kilometres. Expect a similar pattern in 2027 and confirm exact markers in the 2027 athlete guide.

    Sports drink

Gatorade stations appeared five times in 2026 (km 10.5, 19.3, 25.9, 32.5 and 38). Never try a sports drink for the first time on race day; if your stomach is fussy, carry your own mix.

    Medical aid

Medical and physio posts sat at km 14.1, 18.2, 23.3, 33.5, 38.3 and 41, backed by course ambulances and finish-area hospitals. Stop at the first sign of dizziness or chills — heat illness escalates fast in Rio's humidity.

    Food and finish flow

The official food station was at km 36. After the line runners receive water and the medal first; sports drink and fruit come farther along the controlled dispersal walk, so keep moving instead of stopping at the arch.

Spectator guide: where and how to watch

Do not try to chase the marathon by car. Pick one South Zone viewing point plus the finish, use the metro between them, and assume mobile data slows near the busiest barriers.

Skip the start unless you are staying in Barra

Praia da Reserva is remote at 05:30 and the course moves east all morning. Most families get a better race day by sleeping, then meeting their runner in the South Zone.

    Leblon or Ipanema

Pick one beachfront point for an easy sighting, then walk to Antero de Quental or Nossa Senhora da Paz metro. Do not promise an exact kilometre split — wave starts and GPS drift matter.

    Copacabana atmosphere

Avenida Atlântica is the loudest, most visitor-friendly viewing stretch. Stand on the building side, use signed crossings only, and assume ride-hailing is unreliable inside the closures.

    Finish at Aterro do Flamengo

The safest two-point plan: watch in Ipanema or Copacabana, take the metro to Glória, then walk to Monumento aos Pracinhas. Agree a fixed reunion point outside the fenced finish chute before the race.

    Best shakeout runs

Keep the day-before run short, flat and close to your hotel. Rio's prettiest routes make accidental extra kilometres very easy.

    Copacabana · 3–5 km

Flat out-and-back on the calçadão from Posto 5 towards Leme. Go at sunrise, keep it conversational and avoid weaving through evening crowds.

    Lagoa · 4–6 km

Use a short segment of the 7.5 km lagoon loop rather than completing it. The surface is predictable and the Corcovado view is excellent, but crossings interrupt rhythm.

    Aterro · 3–5 km

A calm confidence run near the finish and the expo. During race week respect barriers and event build areas; do not add distance simply because the waterfront feels good.

    Transport and road closures

The 42K start and finish are 35+ km apart by road, and the race closes major coastal corridors. A rehearsed transfer matters more than a hotel that looks close on a map.

    Getting to the 42K start

Options are app car, official transfer bus or an agency package shuttle. For ride-hailing, use Praia da Reserva Posto 9 as the drop-off reference, allow for closures and arrive at least 40 minutes before your wave.

    Bag transport

Official baggage buses ran at the start in the early morning and at Aterro after the finish in 2026. Leave valuables at the hotel; carry only what you truly need to the start.

    Expo transport

Take the metro to Glória and walk to Marina da Glória. There is no expo parking, so plan a metro trip rather than a car.

    After the finish

Glória metro is the most predictable exit. Ride-hailing pickup points get messy while Aterro and nearby avenues are closed; walk a few blocks inland before requesting a car.

    Common mistakes visiting athletes make

    • Waiting for entries to “go on sale” instead of watching for the lottery window — the cheap lots disappear first.
    • Buying a bib from a third party or reseller; transfers are not recognised and the kit will not be released at Casa Maratona.
    • Registering with a name or date of birth that does not match your passport, then fighting to correct it during race week.
    • Calling the course completely flat and spending too much energy before São Conrado and Niemeyer.
    • Booking a Praia da Reserva hotel only for the start, then making the expo, sightseeing and post-race logistics harder.
    • Driving to Casa Maratona even though Marina da Glória has no expo parking.
    • Planning a Christ the Redeemer or Sugarloaf day on Saturday and arriving at the start with tired legs.

    Local expert tips

    • Set a calendar reminder for the lottery announcement and pay your kit fee the day the result lands — deadlines are short.
    • If certainty matters more than price, an accredited travel-agency package includes a guaranteed bib and solves the race-morning transfer.
    • Pin Praia da Reserva Posto 9 and your finish reunion point offline before race morning.
    • Apply sunscreen before the start; the South Zone and Aterro sections are fully exposed after sunrise.
    • Write your hotel and emergency contact on the back of your bib and keep the organiser's emergency contact accessible.
    • After finishing, keep walking through dispersal: water and medal come first, sports drink and fruit are farther on.
    • Verify every 2027 date, wave time and road plan against the official athlete guide when it is published — Rio's route can change.

    Frequently asked questions

When is the Rio Marathon 2027?+

The Maratona do Rio 2027 42K is on Sunday 30 May 2027, with wave starts from around 05:30. The festival runs Thursday 27 May (5K, on the Corpus Christi holiday), Friday 28 May (10K), Saturday 29 May (21K) and Sunday 30 May (42K).

How do I get a bib for the Rio Marathon 2027?+

Register only through Go Dream (godream.com.br), the official ticketing partner. Slots come from four routes: a finisher pre-sale opened on 2026 race day (now closed), a free-to-enter public lottery (sorteio) announced a few months before the race, paid price lots after the draw until sold out, and Itaú Uniclass or accredited travel-agency packages. Third-party bib resale is not recognised.

How much does the Rio Marathon 2027 cost?+

The first 2027 lot for 42K finishers was R$383.90 for the kit without a shirt. Later lots cost more, and each lot rises in price until entries sell out, so registering early in the lot sequence is materially cheaper. The 5K, 10K and 21K are priced lower.

Is there a lottery for the Rio Marathon?+

Yes. As in 2026, most Maratona do Rio 2027 slots are expected to be distributed by lottery. Entry to the draw is free, results are announced within a set window, and successful runners must pay for their kit before a short deadline or lose the slot.

Where does the Rio Marathon 2027 start and finish?+

The 42K starts at Praia da Reserva on Avenida Lúcio Costa in Barra da Tijuca and finishes at Aterro do Flamengo beside Monumento aos Pracinhas and Marina da Glória — the same point-to-point layout used in 2026.

Where is Rio Marathon bib pickup?+

Bib pickup is at Casa Maratona in the Marina da Glória pavilion, Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, Glória, during race week at each runner's booked time slot. Bring photo ID and your registration QR code; there is no expo parking, so use Glória metro.

Can someone else collect my Rio Marathon bib?+

Yes, but only if you authorise the collector in advance on the official athlete platform. They receive a QR code and must show photo ID and the signed responsibility term. Once authorised, you can no longer collect the bib yourself.

Is the Rio Marathon course flat?+

No. It combines coastal flats with ramps and rolling sections around Joatinga, the Lagoa–Barra corridor, São Conrado, Avenida Niemeyer and several tunnel approaches, before a flatter late run through Botafogo, Flamengo and Centro.

What is the Rio Marathon 2027 cut-off?+

Six hours for the 42K. Runners overtaken by the event's sweep vehicle can be removed from the course and will not receive a finisher medal. The 21K cut-off is three hours and the 5K and 10K are 90 minutes.

What is the weather like for the Rio Marathon in late May?+

Late May is Rio's early dry season: pleasant pre-dawn starts around 20–22°C, high humidity and strong sun once the day opens, typically climbing into the high 20s°C. Hydrate early and use sunscreen before the start even for a 05:30 wave.

Where should runners stay for the Rio Marathon?+

Botafogo is the best all-round base: close to the Aterro finish and the Marina da Glória expo, well served by metro and restaurants. Wherever you stay in the South Zone, the start still requires a dedicated race-morning transfer to Barra da Tijuca.

What dates should I book a hotel for the Rio Marathon 2027?+

Check in Wednesday 26 or Thursday 27 May and check out Monday 31 May 2027. International runners who want an unhurried bib pickup and a day of altitude-free acclimatisation to heat and humidity should arrive by Tuesday 25 May.

What is the best area for spectators?+

Copacabana has the strongest atmosphere and the easiest visitor logistics. A practical two-point plan is to watch in Ipanema or Copacabana, then take the metro to Glória and walk to the finish at Aterro do Flamengo.

What is the best pre-race shakeout route in Rio?+

A 3–5 km sunrise jog on the Copacabana promenade or at Aterro do Flamengo: flat, easy to shorten and close to cafés and transport. Keep it conversational and skip the full 7.5 km Lagoa loop.
