Running in Rio: Clubs, Routes & Races
Quick answer
Best route: Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas 7.5 km loop at sunrise. Best club for visitors: Runner's Circle, Copacabana, Saturday 7 AM. Best time to run: 6:00–8:30 AM before the heat. Safest spots: Lagoa, Aterro, Copacabana beachfront.
Rio doesn't get enough credit as a running city. The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas loop at sunrise — Corcovado reflected in glass-still water, heron fishing along the shore, the city not yet awake — is one of the most beautiful 7.5 km runs in the world. The Aterro do Flamengo seafront, car-free on weekends, stretches 8 km past Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay. And Cariocas run seriously: there are active clubs at every fitness level, while the Maratona do Rio festival brought its 21K and 42K to the city on 6–7 June 2026. This is the 2026 guide for visiting runners.

What to wear & bring
- Lightweight, wicking kit: Rio summers are 32°C at 80% humidity. Cotton is brutal.
- Sun hat for morning runs Oct–Mar: UV index hits 10+ by 8 AM in summer.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Apply before you leave the hotel — you'll be sweating it off by kilometre 3.
- Hydration: water kiosks at Lagoa every 1 km, coconut water R$5–8. Bring a handheld bottle for Aterro routes.
- Phone security: Flipbelt or StridePouch worn under clothing. Don't run with phone visible in hand.
- Trail shoes for Santa Teresa: the cobblestones are genuine ankle-rollers.
Safety rules
- Run before 9 AM: heat risk in summer, and tourist-pickpocket activity increases mid-morning.
- No headphones on streets: you need to hear the motorbikes. Fine on Lagoa (no motor vehicles).
- Leave valuables at the hotel: most Carioca runners do — no watch, no phone, run free.
- Stick to lit, busy paths: Lagoa and Aterro have their own security and are very safe.
- Buddy system in Tijuca: never run Tijuca trails solo.
FAQ
Are there running clubs in Rio de Janeiro?
Yes — Rio has a thriving running community. The main clubs are Pacer Rio (Ipanema and Lagoa, Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday), CR Endurance (Leblon, Monday/Wednesday), Runner's Circle (Copacabana beach, Saturday 7 AM), and Pé de Pano (Santa Teresa, Sunday 7 AM). Most welcome drop-ins with no commitment. Join their WhatsApp groups for the exact weekly meeting point.
Where is the best place to run in Rio?
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is the gold standard — 7.5 km flat loop, perfect asphalt, open all hours, kiosks with water and coconut water every kilometre. Aterro do Flamengo has 8 km of seafront path along Guanabara Bay, car-free on weekends. Copacabana beachfront (Avenida Atlântica) is iconic but narrow and crowded. For hills: Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca trails above Jacarepaguá.
Is it safe to run in Rio?
Yes — in the right spots and at the right times. Lagoa and Aterro are very safe 6 AM–9 PM. Copacabana beachfront is safe 6 AM–dusk. Run with your phone in a zippered pocket or leave it at your hotel (most local runners do). Don't run with headphones in on city streets — it signals inattention. Avoid running in Zona Norte parks unless with a local group.
What is the best time to run in Rio?
6:00–8:30 AM before the heat. Rio's summer (December–March) humidity makes midday running brutal — 32°C at 80% humidity will flatten most visitors. October–April: stick to the golden hour. May–September: you can run until 10 AM comfortably. Lagoa at sunrise is one of the most beautiful running experiences in the world — set an alarm.
Does Rio have a parkrun?
Not yet as of 2026 — parkrun Brazil operates in São Paulo, Brasília, Fortaleza and Belo Horizonte but has no confirmed Rio event. The Runner's Circle Saturday 7 AM Copacabana beach run is the closest equivalent — free, informal, all paces welcome. Follow their Instagram for updates.
Is there a running event or race in Rio?
Yes. The 25th-anniversary Maratona do Rio festival runs 27–30 May 2027, one race per day: the 21K starts in Leblon on Saturday 29 May and the 42K starts at Praia da Reserva on Sunday 30 May, both finishing at Aterro do Flamengo. IRONMAN 70.3 Rio follows on 8 August 2027. Registration routes differ by distance and by whether you live in Brazil, so use each organiser's current rules.
