How the calculation works
Accurate enough for a trip, honestly limited at the horizon
The calculator uses central Rio's latitude and longitude, solar declination, the equation of time and the standard apparent-sunrise zenith. That produces a useful city-level answer. It cannot model the building across your street, the shoulder of Dois Irmãos, cloud on the western horizon or a viewpoint hundreds of metres above sea level.
For transparency, the implementation follows the same standard solar-calculation concepts documented by the NOAA solar calculator. NOAA notes that its public calculator is no longer actively maintained, so we cite it for the method, not as a live guarantee.

Why the perfect time still misses the light
- ×Arriving at the displayed sunset time. That is when the sun meets the horizon, not when the best colour begins.
- ×Assuming a famous viewpoint is open at sunrise. Sugarloaf and other ticketed places follow operating hours, not solar time.
- ×Using the city-centre calculation as an exact visible-horizon promise at a mountain, valley or street-level location.
- ×Leaving the moment the sun disappears. The strongest pink or purple afterglow can arrive several minutes later.
- ×Hiking up for sunset without enough daylight for the descent, a charged torch, a known route and a safety plan.

Build a weather-proof light plan
Check the correct horizon
For sunset, inspect the west; for sunrise, inspect the east. Blue sky overhead does not reveal the blocking cloud bank.

Give the sky at least ten minutes after the sun disappears unless safety or transport says leave sooner.
