Uber and 99 do not publish a fixed city tariff. A journey can change price while you are reading about it, so any page promising an exact Ipanema-to-Lapa fare for the whole year is selling false confidence. Yellow taxis are regulated transport, not a category to avoid automatically. They make sense when a staffed official rank has cars waiting, when both apps are struggling, or when an airport booth gives you a written fixed price. • Wait inside. At night, request from the restaurant, hotel or venue and walk out only when the correct car is present.
• Use three-way matching. Plate, model and driver photo should all agree; ask the driver whom they are collecting rather than volunteering your name.
• Keep the app booking active. Do not cancel and pay directly, even if the price sounds lower.
• Share the live trip. Both major apps offer trip-sharing and safety tools; know where they are before the first late ride.
• Wear the rear seat belt. Rio traffic is the everyday risk travellers underestimate.
• Keep the phone low at traffic lights. Use it when needed, but do not hold it beside an open window.
• Use a sensible pickup pin. A bright hotel entrance is better than a dark side street even if it adds a minute.
