Most visitors need an app ride for at least one awkward Rio journey: a late return from Lapa, luggage on an airport day, a hill in Santa Teresa or a beach-to-attraction route that would require two public-transport changes. The apps are useful, but the old advice that one brand is always cheaper or that a pickup point never changes is exactly what causes missed cars.

How to estimate a Rio app fare without fake precision

Uber and 99 do not publish a fixed city tariff. A journey can change price while you are reading about it, so any page promising an exact Ipanema-to-Lapa fare for the whole year is selling false confidence. If the quote jumps, check the map before simply waiting. Moving one busy block to a legal, well-lit pickup point can help; during an event road closure, no amount of refreshing can bring a car through a barrier. Switch to metro or walk only when the route is familiar and appropriate.

1. Activate mobile data before leaving the terminal. Free Wi-Fi can drop at exactly the wrong moment.
2. GIG's public pickup directions conflict: the airport site points to the arrivals floor, while Uber's guide points to the departures floor. Check the app before choosing a level.
3. Select your terminal and pickup point in the app. After a driver is matched, open its live directions and follow the assigned location.
4. Request only when the group and luggage are ready; message the driver through the app if the zone is crowded.
5. Match the plate, vehicle and driver photo. Ignore anyone inside arrivals claiming to be your app driver.

When a licensed yellow taxi is the better call

Yellow taxis are regulated transport, not a category to avoid automatically. They make sense when a staffed official rank has cars waiting, when both apps are struggling, or when an airport booth gives you a written fixed price. What we skip is an unsolicited driver, a meter-free street negotiation or a vague “special tourist price”.

Safety checks that actually reduce risk

• Wait inside. At night, request from the restaurant, hotel or venue and walk out only when the correct car is present.
• Use three-way matching. Plate, model and driver photo should all agree; ask the driver whom they are collecting rather than volunteering your name.
• Keep the app booking active. Do not cancel and pay directly, even if the price sounds lower.
• Share the live trip. Uber's tools and 99's tools both include location sharing, but their other features differ. Add a trusted contact and learn where the safety controls are before your first late ride.
• Wear the rear seat belt. Rio traffic is the everyday risk travellers underestimate.
• Keep the phone low at traffic lights. Use it when needed, but do not hold it beside an open window.
• Use a sensible pickup pin. A bright hotel entrance is better than a dark side street even if it adds a minute.

Common mistakes tourists make

• Following an old airport screenshot. Airport and Uber pickup pages disagree about the floor; follow the assigned location in your app after matching.
• Booking before the group is ready. Drivers cannot wait indefinitely in controlled airport and event zones.
• Comparing different car categories. A basic car in one app is not a fair comparison with a larger or premium tier in the other.
• Assuming 99 is always cheaper. Supply changes street by street. Quote both.
• Assuming a woman-driver option always means a woman will be assigned. Uber's preference can fall back when local supply is limited; open the app's current conditions before you book.
• Using rides through Réveillon closures. On major event nights, metro and a planned walk often beat a car that cannot reach the pin.

Local expert tips

• Save your hotel's full address and entrance pin in both apps before you go out.
• For Santa Teresa, place the pin on the actual restaurant or square; a neighbouring staircase can be a very different pickup.
• After a Maracanã match or concert, follow police barriers and walk with the crowd to a functioning pickup zone before opening the app.
• At the beach, request from a kiosk number or hotel entrance on Avenida Atlântica rather than dropping a pin on the sand.
• If mobile data fails, use a staffed hotel, restaurant or official taxi rank instead of accepting help from an unsolicited driver.
