GIG Airport Lounges & Sleep Pods

A 6-hour layover at GIG can be brutal or it can be a hot meal, a shower and four hours of real sleep. The difference is knowing which of the six lounges to walk to, what's open at 3am, and when sleep pods beat lounges.

Terminal map (essential)

GIG has two terminals connected by a free 5-minute shuttle (and a 12-minute walk via the inter-terminal walkway):

Terminal 1 — domestic + a handful of regional (Aerolíneas, Copa). Older, simpler, one lounge (GRU VIP).
Terminal 2 — all international (Latam, GOL international, Air France, United, Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM, TAP, American, Delta, Avianca, Copa long-haul). Where every premium lounge lives.

Terminal 2 lounges (international)

Plaza Premium — Pier B, airside

The best lounge at GIG and the only one open 24 hours. 500 seats, three dining zones, free shower suites (towel, gel, hair dryer provided), a darkened sleep room with reclining loungers, and a small business cluster with privacy phones. The wifi is the only reliable 200 Mbps+ connection airside.

Access: Priority Pass, DragonPass, Lounge Key, Plaza Premium membership, Amex Platinum, walk-in R$220.
Food: full hot buffet — feijoada Saturdays, grilled fish weekdays, plus a permanent pasta and salad station.
Drinks: open bar with cachaça, caipirinhas made to order, Brazilian wines, espresso.

American Express Centurion Lounge — Pier C

Reopened post-renovation in 2025. Smaller (180 seats), much better design, chef-driven menu by Brazilian chef Felipe Bronze. Amex Platinum cardholders only. 5am–11pm.

Star Alliance Lounge

Pier B, near United/Lufthansa gates. Sleek, quieter than Plaza Premium, runway view. Star Alliance Gold + business class on a Star Alliance carrier. No paid walk-ins.

Latam VIP Lounge

For Latam business class and Oneworld Emerald. Renovated in 2024, properly stocked Brazilian bar, the best espresso at GIG. No Priority Pass access.

Sala VIP T2

Contract lounge. Priority Pass accepted, Amex Platinum, walk-in R$190. Smaller, simpler food, faster check-in than Plaza Premium during morning rush. Useful overflow option.

Terminal 1 lounge (domestic)

GRU VIP Lounge T1

Only lounge in T1. Priority Pass and walk-in R$170. Adequate breakfast, decent shower, fast wifi. The only quiet space in an otherwise chaotic terminal.

Sleep Box GIG — when lounges aren't enough

For overnight layovers (5h+), a pod beats a lounge. Sleep Box GIG runs ~30 cabins in Terminal 2 airside, near Gate B. Each unit has a real bed, blackout curtains, charging, a desk and a private locker. Showers are shared and clean.

8-hour overnight: R$280 (cheaper than a Recreio hotel + roundtrip Uber)

Showers at GIG (the unsung lifesaver)

Plaza Premium — free with entry, 8 shower suites, queue rare.
Sleep Box — included with any pod booking.
Banheiros pagos near Gate C25 — paid public shower R$25, basic but functional 24h.

Wifi reality check

The free airport wifi caps at ~10 Mbps and disconnects every 30 minutes. Plaza Premium and Sleep Box have proper 200 Mbps+ business circuits. The Centurion lounge has the fastest connection but the smallest crowd cap.

Food & dining outside lounges

If you can't access a lounge, the airside food scene at T2 is decent:

Galeto Sat's — grilled chicken set, R$55, the airport's best value.
Mr. Lam Express — Cantonese, R$80 mains.
Brasileirinho — feijoada and moqueca, R$70.
Starbucks — two locations T2, 24h.
Hering Café — proper espresso, R$10.

The overnight layover routine

Clear immigration. Drop checked-bag transit; carry-on only into T2 airside.
Shower at Plaza Premium or Sleep Box.
Eat at the lounge before kitchen reduces overnight menu (most close hot service midnight–4am except Plaza Premium).
Sleep 4–6h in Sleep Box.
Wake 2h before boarding. Coffee, water, re-screen at the gate.

When to leave the airport instead

If your layover is 8h+ and lands between 7am–4pm, leave the airport:

Uber to Copacabana 50 min, R$110–140.
Beach time, lunch, a single caipirinha, Uber back.
