We would rather give you one bookable lead than five club names that waste an afternoon. Rio Tennis Academy is in Laranjeiras, between the Zona Sul beaches and Centro, and runs court hire for outside clients across six clay courts, three hard courts and two beach-tennis courts. It no longer posts a public price list — you reserve and get a quote over WhatsApp (+55 21 98382-0738) — so budget roughly R$180–250 an hour as a planning range and always confirm the current figure, including balls, lighting and racket hire, before you cross town.

A lesson is often easier than arranging a bare court, especially for a solo traveller. Ask for an aula avulsa (one-off lesson) or professor para bater bola (coach to hit with). State your level honestly: an “intermediate” holiday player and a Brazilian tournament player will not mean the same thing by jogo forte (strong game).

Where to play padel in Rio

Padel is established in Rio but much smaller than beach tennis, so search results regularly mix the two sports. Padel uses an enclosed glass court; beach tennis is played over a high net on sand and is everywhere along Barra, Ipanema and Copacabana. If you want padel, confirm the venue has glass walls before paying.

Barra looks close on a map and can be an hour or more from Ipanema in weekday traffic. Pair a morning game with the Barra da Tijuca guide, or book outside commuter peaks. A four-player court is normally paid as one booking and divided between the group; ask the club to place you into a match if you are travelling alone.

Private clubs: impressive courts, unreliable visitor access

Rio's most photogenic clay courts often belong to old social clubs. That matters because several online guides confuse “has tennis courts” with “rents tennis courts to anyone”. Unless you are hosted by a member, get written confirmation before including one in your day.

How to make a booking without Portuguese

1. Send the complete request once: date, start time, number of players, sport, level and whether you need rackets.
2. Ask for the total: Qual é o valor total, incluindo raquete, bolas e iluminação? means “What is the total including racket, balls and lighting?”
3. Confirm the surface and cover: clay may close after rain; a covered padel court is safer in a summer downpour.
4. Get the address and entry instruction: large complexes such as Vogue Square have multiple entrances.
5. Do not depend on Pix: most short-term visitors cannot automatically use Brazil's instant bank system. Ask whether an international card or cash is accepted.

Heat, rain and what to pack

From October through March, an exposed 11 AM court can turn a pleasant hit into heat management. Book early, take at least a litre of water per player and use high-SPF sunscreen. Rio's summer rain is often sudden: ask whether a cancellation becomes credit or a refund. Clay needs recovery time after heavy rain even when the sky has cleared.

Imported tennis equipment is expensive in Brazil. Bring shoes you trust, spare grips and any specialist strings. Rio Open 2027: what is confirmed

The Rio Open is Rio's ATP 500 event and the biggest professional tennis week in South America. The 2027 edition runs from 13 to 21 February on outdoor clay at Jockey Club Brasileiro (qualifying the weekend before, main draw through the final Sunday). Organisers have announced the tournament's largest-ever expansion for 2027 — the site grows from roughly 40,000 to 67,000 m² with about 50% more public capacity — so expect more, but not cheaper, seating.

General-public tickets go on sale through the official seller, Eventim, from 13 October 2026 at 11 AM (an XP Card pre-sale runs 6–12 October), with announced prices ranging from about R$70 to R$990 by session and section.
