Rio Christmas Tree 2026: When to See the Lagoa Tree
The Lagoa Christmas Tree is expected back on 28 November. We separate the reported date from the details still to come, then plan a relaxed evening around the lagoon.

Quick answer
As of 25 October 2026, Rio’s Lagoa Christmas Tree is expected to be inaugurated on 28 November, according to local reporting; the official programme, daily lighting hours, access rules and closing date have not been published. Treat 28 November as a reported target, check current notices before travelling, and plan a relaxed evening around the lagoon rather than a trip built around one tree.

Rio’s Christmas tree is not in a square beside a market. It sits on the water at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, with the city’s hills behind it and the neighbourhood promenade between the viewer and the lights. That setting is the reason to go: the evening feels like a local summer ritual, not a pop-up attraction you can tick off in ten minutes.
There is one planning wrinkle for 2026. Local reporting gives 28 November as the expected inauguration, but the City Hall’s detailed traffic and operating notice, the light schedule and the programme for this edition were not published when we checked on 25 October. We separate that reported date from confirmed details below. For the year-round route, kiosks and daytime choices around the water, open our Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas guide; for a wider seasonal picture, see Rio in December.
This is a dated Rio Journal update, not a promise that the 2026 event will repeat last year’s exact design or logistics. We will change the review date only after checking the new official programme. The Rio Journal covers the details that move quickly; the evergreen guides keep the slower planning advice.

What is confirmed for the Rio Christmas Tree 2026?
The 2026 edition is expected back at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Diário do Rio and Rádio Manchete Rio both reported in July that the producers, Dream Factory and BackStage, had set 28 November for the inauguration. Band Rio separately confirmed the return of the tree in July, while saying the opening date and programme were still to be announced at that point.
That difference in wording matters. We can give you the date being reported, but we cannot present it as a complete City Hall event plan. As of 25 October 2026, we had not found a new municipal operation notice with the confirmed start time, daily lighting hours, access map, traffic restrictions or the final night. Check the organisers’ current channels and Riotur’s event calendar again close to your visit.
| Question | What we can say | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| When does it open? | 28 November is the date currently reported for the inauguration. | Treat it as a target until the producer or city publishes the final programme. |
| Where is the tree? | The returning event is at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. | Use the exact 2026 access map; the shoreline is long and entrances are not interchangeable. |
| What time are the lights on? | The 2026 hours were not published at review time. | Do not plan around 2025’s hours without checking the new notice. |
| Are there shows or family activities? | No 2026 programme was available to verify. | Treat any unconfirmed concert, food area or children’s activity as a possibility, not a promise. |
| When does the display end? | The closing date for 2026 was not published. | If your trip is in December or January, verify that your chosen date falls within the run. |
Is the Lagoa Christmas Tree worth a special trip?
Our honest verdict: it is a lovely evening to add to a Rio visit, but not a reason to fly to Rio by itself. The tree gives you a very Rio backdrop — dark water, warm night air, the hills and the Corcovado silhouette — and the surrounding neighbourhood is pleasant to spend time in. The visit works best when you already have a few days in the city and can leave the evening flexible.
If you are in Rio for only one or two nights, compare the tree with the things you most want from the trip. The event could be crowded, the final access plan may send you to a different side of the lagoon than expected, and the weather can make an outdoor evening less comfortable. A clear view from a promenade is not the same thing as a guaranteed front-row event seat.
We would go if we were staying in Ipanema, Copacabana, Leblon or Botafogo and wanted one low-pressure evening outdoors. We would not move hotels, pay a premium for a room marketed as ‘tree view’, or make a tight airport connection depend on the event. If you want the lagoon itself to be the point of the day, pair the lights with a daytime walk or cycle and follow the practical detail in the Lagoa guide.
The tree is a good fit if you…
- Are already in Rio in late November or December and want a free-form evening outside.
- Enjoy city lights and public celebrations more than ticketed attractions with a fixed viewing slot.
- Can keep the night open until the 2026 programme and transport plan are published.
- Are travelling with someone who would enjoy the atmosphere even if the event area is busy.
Where to view it around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas
The lagoon is a large loop, so “go to Lagoa” is not a precise meeting instruction. The floating display has historically been visible from several public-facing points, while the formal stage or activity area can sit at a single venue. Pick a shore or official entrance before you leave, share it with your group, and do not assume the nearest-looking bridge or park gate will be open for event entry.
For the 2025 inauguration, the City Hall named the Lagoon Complex as the event site and said high-definition screens would also be set up at Parque dos Patins and Parque do Cantagalo. That gave people more than one way to see the opening. The 2026 layout has not been published, so use those names as landmarks from last year rather than confirmed viewing zones for this edition.
| Plan | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official event area | People who want the stage, opening moment or organised programme | Likely to be the busiest point; check tickets, entry limits and accessible routes. |
| A public lakeside stretch | A shorter look at the lights without committing to a full programme | The view and sightline depend on this year’s structure and event footprint. |
| A different park named in the event notice | Groups who want to spread out or use a screen if one is provided | Screens and family attractions were part of 2025, not yet confirmed for 2026. |
Getting there: plan around the Metro, not a car park
For the 2025 opening, Rio City Hall recommended public transport and MetrôRio named General Osório / Ipanema, Access E — Lagoa, on Avenida Epitácio Pessoa near Corte do Cantagalo, as the station access to use. The current MetrôRio map still lists General Osório / Ipanema on Line 1. That makes the Metro a sensible starting point for a South Zone evening, but the 2026 event may issue a different entrance recommendation, special operating hours or crowd-control route.
Before leaving, check MetrôRio’s current service notices and the event organiser’s map. Our Rio Metro guide explains fares, payment and how to orient yourself at stations; the wider Rio transport guide covers buses and ride apps. Do not take a 2025 special service schedule as proof that trains will run late for the 2026 inauguration.
A lower-stress arrival plan:
Before the day
Check the final notice
Confirm the opening time, which areas are public, whether any activity needs a reservation, and which Metro exit the organiser recommends. Save a screenshot in case your connection drops.
On the way in
Use rail for the main leg
Choose the station and exit from the current event map. If you use a ride app, set a pickup point on an open street away from the densest crowd rather than expecting a car to reach the water’s edge.
On the way out
Leave time for the walk back
Do not schedule a tight dinner reservation on the opposite side of town immediately after the lighting. If the Metro is busy, wait in a staffed public place and follow the posted queue rather than accepting an unsolicited ride.
Driving is the option we would leave until last. In 2025, the city restricted parking along Avenida Epitácio Pessoa and Borges de Medeiros during the season and told visitors to prioritise public transport. That does not confirm 2026’s road plan, but it is a good reason not to build an evening around finding a space beside the lagoon. Check the updated CET-Rio notice if you have a mobility need that makes a car essential.
A simple evening plan that leaves room for Rio
Do not turn a Christmas-light visit into a forced itinerary. The best version gives you time to arrive, look at the display, have a drink or a snack nearby if a suitable place is open, and leave when the crowd starts to feel like work. The 2026 event programme and operating hours are still pending; once they appear, place your arrival around the published start rather than guessing from last year.
If you are visiting the lagoon in daylight too, use the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas guide to pick a section and activity. The loop is a much calmer daytime outing, and it gives you an idea of the distances before you return after dark. Keep the tree visit to one area; walking the full perimeter just to see whether another viewpoint is better can turn a pleasant night into a long, hot trudge.
A practical sequence once the official schedule is known:
- Have an early dinner or a substantial snack before heading to the event area; do not count on a 2026 food village until one is announced.
- Arrive with enough time to find your chosen viewpoint and check where the toilets and staffed exits are.
- Watch the lighting without keeping your phone raised for the whole show. Take a few photos, then enjoy the reflection and the city around it.
- Leave by the route you checked on the way in. If the group is tired, use the Metro or a ride pickup point from the current transport notice.
- Keep a flexible backup for rain. Our rainy-day Rio guide has indoor ideas if an outdoor evening stops making sense.
Where to stay if the tree is one part of your trip
You do not need a hotel beside the lagoon to see the tree. Choose your base for the whole trip: beach access, Metro connections, the places you want to eat and how you prefer to get home at night. Ipanema is a practical starting point for a stay that mixes the beach with Lagoa, but check the exact hotel address and the 2026 event route rather than trusting a “near the tree” label.
For a first visit, compare the neighbourhood trade-offs in where to stay in Rio. If your December room is still flexible, these are PlanRio’s hand-picked Ipanema options; the collection is a shortlist, not a claim that each property is walkable to the event. Check cancellation terms and your dates before booking.

We would not pay extra for an advertised tree view until the 2026 installation position and sightlines are confirmed. The lagoonside skyline changes with the event footprint, and a hotel room may not face the water at all. If the tree is your one reason to visit, wait for the official details before committing money to a non-refundable room.
Accessibility, children and crowd comfort
The lagoon’s public edge and an organised event area are not the same thing. A clear sightline from a promenade does not guarantee step-free access, accessible toilets, seating, a quiet zone or a manageable route through a crowd. The 2025 City Hall notice named public screens at two parks, but that is not a verified access plan for 2026.
If someone in your group uses a wheelchair or walking aid, needs a seat, has a sensory sensitivity, or will be with a young child, contact the organisers once the current map is published. Ask specifically about the route surface, kerbs, accessible toilets, reserved viewing space, crowd limits and how to leave. Do not rely on a generic “family-friendly” label as an accessibility guarantee.
For a child, agree on a recognisable adult and meeting point, keep the group together near the edge of the event area, and write down the hotel address. If the crowd compresses or someone becomes tired, move out early. The evening is optional; the lagoon and its daytime activities will still be there another day.

Frequently asked questions
When will the Rio Christmas Tree be lit in 2026?
Local reporting gives 28 November 2026 as the expected inauguration date. As of 25 October, the city’s detailed event notice and lighting times had not been published, so check the organisers and Riotur before travelling.
Where is the Lagoa Christmas Tree in Rio?
The Árvore da Lagoa is set at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio’s South Zone. The 2026 entrance and viewing map are not yet public, so choose a shore or park only after checking the current event notice.
Is the Rio Christmas Tree free to see?
The 2026 admission rules and any controlled event areas have not been announced. The lagoon has public promenades, but concerts, reserved activities or event spaces may have separate rules; confirm the current programme before you go.
What time does the Lagoa Christmas Tree turn on?
The 2026 lighting hours were not published as of 25 October 2026. In 2025, the city listed evening lighting from 19:00 with different closing times by day, but visitors should not assume that schedule will repeat.
Which Metro station should I use for the tree?
For the 2025 opening, Rio City Hall recommended General Osório / Ipanema station and Access E — Lagoa, near Corte do Cantagalo. Check the 2026 operation notice because entrances and crowd routes can change from one edition to another.
Is the Lagoa Christmas Tree worth visiting?
It is worth adding as a relaxed evening if you are already in Rio in late November or December and enjoy public celebrations. We would not make it the only reason for a long or expensive trip while the 2026 schedule and access details are still pending.
How long should I allow for a visit?
Set aside around an hour for a simple look at the lights, plus extra time for the walk from transport and any official programme. Add more only after the 2026 event map, stage schedule and crowd arrangements are confirmed.
