Football is Rio's second religion. Every beach, every day, from sunrise until floodlights turn off, someone is playing. Here's how to join a pickup game — pelada — as a visitor, plus futevôlei, altinha, and where to book a real pitch.

The three beach games
Pelada (beach football, 5v5)
Traditional football on sand with small portable goals. Games form organically — look for players warming up around 6 AM or 5 PM. Copacabana Postos 4–6 and Leblon Posto 12 have the most reliable pickup.
Futevôlei (2v2)
Rio's home-grown sport. Played on a volleyball court, no hands, ball off feet, chest and head. Ipanema Posto 9 hosts semi-pro players daily. Watch first — the level is high.
Altinha (keep-it-up circle)
The most beginner-friendly: 4–8 players in a circle keeping the ball off the sand. The Arpoador end of Ipanema at sunset is the classic altinha stage.
Etiquette for visitors
- Ask before joining: "posso jogar?" (can I play?)
- Play the position they give you — usually defence for newcomers.
- Barefoot always on sand. Never wear boots.
- Cheer good play from the other team — Rio football is joyful, not tribal.
- Leave when the regulars start arranging teams for a serious game.

Can tourists join beach football games in Rio?
Yes — pickup (pelada) games run every morning and evening on Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Aterro do Flamengo. Approach a game with an odd number of players and ask 'posso jogar?'. Skill matters more than nationality.
What's the difference between futebol, futevôlei and altinha?
Futebol is 5v5 or 7v7 on sand goals. Futevôlei is 2v2 on a volleyball court, ball allowed only with feet, chest and head. Altinha is a keep-it-up circle — Rio's most beginner-friendly game.
Where can I book a football pitch by the hour?
Society (7-a-side) pitches are bookable in Botafogo, Lagoa and Barra from R$250/hour split between players. Try Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha or Sports Club Rio.
