The polygons are administrative neighbourhood limits from the Prefeitura do Rio—not invented tourism zones. We store a simplified local snapshot so the shapes remain available even if the municipal service is offline.

What are the best neighbourhoods to stay in Rio de Janeiro?
Ipanema is Rio's best all-round first-time base because beach, metro, restaurants and short daytime walks come together in one compact area. Does this map show every neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro?
This map shows the 19 Rio neighbourhoods with dedicated PlanRio guides, not all of the city's official bairros. It deliberately focuses on areas visitors commonly compare for accommodation or exploration, from Recreio in Zona Oeste to Tijuca in Zona Norte and Lapa near Centro.
Are the neighbourhood boundaries on this map accurate?
The coloured shapes use the Prefeitura do Rio's official Limite de Bairros municipal dataset, simplified slightly so the map loads quickly. A boundary is an administrative line, not a guarantee that every street inside it has the same atmosphere, transport access or safety conditions.
Are Ipanema and Copacabana next to each other?
Yes. Ipanema meets Copacabana around Arpoador, and the two main beachfront districts are roughly 10–20 minutes apart by metro or car depending on your exact start point. Walking from central Ipanema to central Copacabana takes about 35–45 minutes.
How far is Barra da Tijuca from Ipanema?
Barra da Tijuca begins west of São Conrado and is much farther from classic Rio sights than it appears on a tourist map. The metro can take roughly 25–35 minutes between Jardim Oceânico and Ipanema; hotels deeper in Barra usually require another bus, car or app ride.
Which Rio neighbourhoods have metro access?
